HUGGY BEAR BOOTLEGS

This is a list of all the HB tapes I have gotten from people over the last little while. They are not quite bootlegs though.

1) 9/19/19 Home Tape
Tracks: will try to list soon

Side A:
A home recording which has songs from the 9/91 Demo, the BK split 12" and some other ones. This tape is all really lo-fi bedroom recordings....with a lot of acoustic guitar and some keybaords even and minmal percussion on some songs. A really odd tape. Really sparse and poppy...lots of weird noises and samples between the songs also.

Side B:
The band playing more in a live way with drums, guitats, bass, vox etc. Some songs from elsewhere and some only on here. Sounds like a really lo-fi live show recording.
2) 9/91 Demo Tape
Tracks: Boy Wants A Dinosaur, Queen Of Country Singing, Boyfriend Sort Of Thing, Spotlight Right, Everlasting 1 Minute Song, Mystery Girl, Burial Shirt.

The band's first demo tape. Hearing this is not really essential for the harcore HB fan...well maybe it is...but this tape really does not sound anything like any other Huggy Bear material. It kinda sounds like The Pastels and Beat Happening, but more lo-fi and noisy. The only similarities to later material is a little bit of the vocal stylings, but that is pretty much it. Another interesting peice of info is that on this recording Matthew from Heavenly was the drummer and Karen was the bassist I believe.

3) WE BITCHED Tape
Tracks: Carnt Kiss, Into The Mission, Noise Track I, Noise Track II, Coral Kill, Sour Creamer Stag, Noise Track III, Bumper Stick Us, Weird Noise Song Thing, T-Shirt Tucked In, Blowdry, Hopskorch

The first song, Carnt Kiss, is also on the 2nd KRS comp. The two noise tracks are unreleased and sound similar to some of the stuff on the Shimmies In Super 8 compilation. The final three songs are fairly poppy and unlike most Huggy Bear material. Coral Kill is a quick acoustic-y song sung by Jo with a bunch of weird noises and samples in the middle. Sour Creamer Stag is sung by Chris and it is a really amazing song...very, very poppy and catchy. Bumper Stick Us is a poppy and bouncy song with a sound similar to the BK split 12" material. I hope to get the rest of this demo in the near future. T-Shirt tucked in is way more raw and live than the record version. Blowdry is just vox, hand clapping and an out of tune guitar. Hopskorch is sludgy guitar and vox.

4) December 1992 John Peel Session
Tracks: Hopsctoch, Teen Tighterns, Nu Song, Her Jazz.

This is taken from the bands first ever John Peel Session. The four songs are played quite similar to how they are on record, but there is some alternative vocal parts and Chris double tracks his vocals in stereo on most of the tracks which sounds pretty cool. There also is a lot fo effects on the songs that the band did not use on the records to create a much more slick sound to the songs. I feel that the version of Her Jazz on here is even a little better than the already great record version.

5) June 1993 John Peel Session
Tracks: Limit 2 Surf, You Don't, Our Voltage, Steppin on Bugs.

This one starts off with John Peel announcing that the entire Huggy Bear line-up has changed, including the Rinky Dink Kid (the now departed Jon) on silent guitar. The versions of Limit 2 Surf and Steppin on Bugs are a lot better than the ones on the poorly recorded Long Distance Lovers 7". The middle songs are both unreleased, yet they were played live quite often. You Don't is a faster one with Jo on vocals and reminds me a lot of Babes In Toyland. Our voltage is slower with a lot of dynamics and interesting team vocals by Jo and Niki on the chorus.

6) Live at Powerhaus 8-4-93
Tracks: No Sleep, Little White Boy, Perfect Kiss, Teen Tighterns, Pansy Twist, Wanna Kill Me, Her Jazz, Sizzlemeet.

All the songs from the 10" are quite similar to the original versions, except for some different lyrics and song endings. Little White Boy sounds kinda like an improv, but is still pretty cool. There is a lot in between song talking for those of you curious at to what they have to say.

7) Live In Japan
Tracks: I will list them all soon.

This was recorded during the Huggy Bear Japanese tour with Boredoms off-shoot Ufo Or Die. The recording is really good quality (almost too slick), except for the vocals being a little too loud. This has mainly songs from Weaponry, along with a couple off the 10". It cuts of during the final song, but it is not a problem. Good tape. Another interesting fact is that Rachael from Red Monkey played bass for them on this tour for some reason.

8) Brighton Pavilion, March 18th, 1993
Tracks: Pansy Twist, Teen Tighterns, T-Shirt Tucked In, Into The Mission, Nu Song, Her Jazz, Hopscotch (way different), Carn't Kiss, February 14, Catholic Cunt, Rebel Boy.

This is from the first Euro tour with Bikini Kill. Although it is a good performance, the recording is pretty shitty. The guitars are especially grating in the louder parts of almost every song. The final song, Rebel Boy, which sounds like it was made up on the spot, is a mid-tempo blues-y tribute to the Bikini Kill song Rebel Girl.

9) Live in the UK 1993 of 1994

40 minute recording of a solid live set near the end of HB's time. The set features mainly Weaponry meterial with along with 2 songs off the Main Squeeze 7". Pretty noisey, but you can hear everything which is good. Not much banter between songs either on this one.
