RELATED BANDS

BIKINI KILL

Bikini Kill and Huggy Bear were quite good friends. They did some tours together, as well as the split 12" on Catcall/Kill Rock Stars. Pretty much everyone knows about Bikini Kill, so I will not say too much. If you have not heard them, they have similarities to HB, but with a more straight up punk and raw sound.

BLOOD SAUSAGE

This band was together around the same time as Huggy Bear. Their sound is similar to Huggy Bear's earlier stuff, but with more of an 80's fall type sound. Nikki and Jo played on their Happy Little Bullshit Boy 10" EP.

Dennis Lavant 7" (K)

SKINNED TEEN

Skinned Teen played ultra minimal garage music that sounded kinda like Beat Happening crossed with early Bratmobile maybe. Chris from HB appeared on the cover of their split LP Raooul. Contrary to what others have said, Chris did not play on the split LP at all. Layla from Skinned Teen now plays in the band Petty Crime (7" on Slampt) and there is a cassette of "early" Skinned Teen material released on the Spazoom label.

THE PHANTOM PREGNANCIES

This was a mysterious punk band that raided shows, played in pajamas, recorded their records on boom-boxes and had no real names. The Phantom Pregnancies were the leaders of the anti-digital movement, to the point that their track on a damaged goods CD comp is one minute of silence. It is rumored that Huggy Bear members were involved with the Phantom Pregnancies but it has never been 100% proven. You can still order the LP form Damaged Goods and the Special Child 7" from Troubleman. Dim Mik has also recently issued an LP compiling everything called "The Compilation That Could've Been A Contender".

THE ELEMENT OF CRIME

This was a band which was together some time during Huggy Bear's existance. I don't know much about them except Chris sang, Jo and Dale from Blood Sausage traded bass duties, and Andy from Linus (they are on SOME HEARTS PAID TO LIE) played guitar and Daryl from Sister George played the drums and Layla from Skinned Teen did some rad back-ups. The Element of Crime 7" was supposed to be the first in a series of Huggy Bear offshoot 7" singles, but no others came after this one. Here is some more info I got from Layla: "Chris wrote the lyrics crouched down in the tube station we were waiting for Bratmobile to come. The studio was Toe Rag, which is the same place a lot of Billy Childish/Holly Go Lightly stuff was recorded, really rad old equipment and atmosphere too. It was a drunken party style recording, songs all written on the spur of the moment."

Release:
The Things You Do For Love 7" (Soul Static Sound)

COMET GAIN

Comet Gain used to play shows with Huggy Bear quite often and were also featured on the Some Hearts Paid To Lie 2x7" comp. After leaving Huggy Bear, Jon has been in Comet Gain on and off since. As of now, Jon is a member of Comet Gain and played on their newest album, Realistes. They have a sound similar to that of Huggy Bear, but they incorporate more of a soulful, rock feel to things.

PUSSYCAT TRASH

This was a band that were around the same time as Huggy Bear. Pussycat Trash have a sound similar to Huggy Bear, but they are more garage-y and have more of a sense of humour. Rachael from PCT filled in on bass for Huggy Bear on a Japense tour. PCT released a bunch of stuff that I highly recommend and they now have a discography CD available from Troubleman Unlimited. Pete and Rachael from Pussycat Trash now play in Red Monkey.

FRUMPIES

You all probably know them by know so I will not say much. Loud lo-fi garagey three guitar attack with 3/4 of Bikini Kill and 1/3 of Bratmobile (and 1/4 of Make-Up for a short time). They did some touring with Huggy Bear.

I'M BEING GOOD

Featuring Mr. Slade. Jon joined this band just after he left HB. He has been on and off in the band and from a source, I hear he is not in the band at the moment (he does not play on some of their recordings). They have put out few releases over the years. I have only heard the song they did on the Slampt 4-Track 7" compilation and it is in the U.S. Maple, Trumans Water side of things.

Discography:
Hate Sturdy Buildings 7" (I.C.)
Balleeeen 7" (I.C.)
Poison LP/CD (I.C.)

THE FURBELOWS

A very mysterious HB offshoot which featured Nikki and Jo I believe. They played some shows and did some recording which may have been released as a cassette or something, but that is all I really know.

THE HOMECOMINGS

Yet another mysterious HB offshoot. This band features Nikki and Chris and I have seen a thing by them on the other HB site talking about them doing a release sometime.
