Catalog Course Description
Designed to develop teacher competency related to the bilingual instruction
of coursework in language arts, social studies, science and mathematics
in both English and Spanish. The use of ESL in these content areas is emphasized.
Purpose of the Course
The purposes of this course are consistent with the university's mission,
"by teaching we learn;" the Center's mission, "facilitating learning for
a diverse world;" Teacher Education Program department's mission, "ensuring
graduates are prepared to be outstanding educational leaders who demonstrate
the knowledge and skills necessary to educate and work withing a diverse
school population." The course uses a critical-constructive approach which
allows students to explore issues of importance and examine how these issues
relate to larger social constructs. This course is designed to assist students
in developing the skills needed to successfully teach in bilingual environments.
This course meets the Bilingual Education (K-12) endorsement requirements
WAC 180-79A-326(4). This course also meets the requirements for Standard
3 of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE).
Outcomes/Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, students will be prepared to:
1. Organize classroom structures to best the needs of students in bilingual
programs;
2. Demonstrate ability to modify, create and organize appropriate classroom
materials;
3. Demonstrate understanding of bilingual education methodologies in
language arts, social studies, math, and sciences;
4. Conduct bilingual lessons for Spanish speaking students.

Assignments
1. Class participation: (20%) Students will expected to actively participate
in class. Attendance is required for participation to take place.
2. Weekly Assignments: (20%) You will have a small weekly assignments
when no other assignments are due. You will be given the assignment on
Monday.
3. Lesson Unit: (30%) Develop a one-week thematic lesson unit (including
relevant materials) that could be used with bilingual students.
4. Bilingual Classroom Organization System: (10%) Create a graphic
representation of how classroom would be organized and movement between
units would be facilitated.
5. Conduct Lessons: (20%) Class students will teach bilingual students
from local schools, following the lesson plans developed during course.
