> The Atlanta Chapter had its annual Old Fashioned Tea Party on Saturday May 17, 2003, at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross. They successfully staged the search for the 2003 Atlanta Challenge recipient and the winner, Alicia Dixon, age 15, was hosted by them in July. The Annual picnic was also in July on Saturday, July 26, 2003 in Newtown Park.

Atlanta Flashback:

Atlanta Challenge 2002 was a huge success. The first recipient of the award, Deborah Ann (Debbie) Thomas was an absolute delight. Debbie’s host families – Sharon Marks and Christine Thompson - and a number of other ‘big sisters’ from SHPSA Atlanta were responsible for ensuring that her two weeks in Atlanta were filled with activities, which were fun, exciting, and informative.
Debbie visited Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia where she was able to interview educators who were knowledgeable in the Marine Sciences. This proved very useful given her specific interest in oceanography. Debbie also displayed a great deal of interest in marine biology and had some exciting discussions in this area.

The SHPSA Atlanta Family Fun Day on July 27th afforded a number of members the opportunity to meet and spend time with Debbie. The theme for the day was food, fun, and games! As one big sister said, ‘Debbie taught us the new dances, the Online and the Log On! I don’t know who had more fun – Debbie or us!’ She went to the movies with Laverne Chen-Laman and a couple of her students. She went to Church with Inez Carnegie (former principal) and Annette Stewart and rounded out that day with lunch and a visit to the Jacob Lawrence art exhibit. She visited the Atlanta Zoo with Carol-Ann Denton, spent a day at Six Flags with Jackie Levy, hung out at an indoor car-racing track with Christine Thompson and spent one day with Flavia Gunter visiting a couple of ‘must see’ sites, the Cyclorama and the Fernbank Museum of Natural History.

Of course no trip to Atlanta would be complete without shopping and there was certainly a lot of that.
A lot was packed into two weeks. In summing up, one big sister said, ‘we certainly had a lot of fun and we hope Debbie did as well and that she learned something from this experience. We’re looking forward to Atlanta Challenge 2003.’

St. Hugh's/KC Soiree

The third, annual St. Hugh’s and KC Holiday Soiree was held on Friday, December 13, 2002. Over 300 people enjoyed a festive night of food, fun, and music. Door prizes were provided by Air Jamaica and our very own Dr. Evett Benjamin who recently opened a full service spa and treatment center in Alpharetta, Georgia.

South Florida Flashback:

After a few successful meetings the chapter took the next step of having a Founders' reunion in November 2002. Despite torrential rains on the Saturday night we had a turnout of about 200 persons. A photo display was reproduced from the 100th Anniversary magazine and from pictures of other South Florida events. In between dancing, eating and talking, some persons took the time to read the centenary magazine and buy memorabilia. The Jamaican buffet was a hit and gate prizes made it all the more exciting. The church service the morning after had a turnout of some 60 persons and was a fitting ending to the celebrations.

New York Flashback:

We are pleased to announce that we had our first solo function in eleven years which was held on November 3, 2002 at the Ramada Palace Hotel and it was a success. It was our St. Hugh's Day event and featured well-known Jamaican singer, Dobby Dobson, in cabaret. The ninety-odd persons who supported us had lots of fun and we made more than US$1,000.00.
As usual, the chapter was active in the Union of the Jamaican Alumni Associations (UJAA) and we had a mega raffle, with a Mercedez Benz as the main prize and a Toyota corolla as second prize.

A core of about eleven of us held two meetings in 2002 and now feel ready to go the next step and have the election of officers.
All past students in NY, NJ or the surrounding areas who would like to help, please feel free to email me at fachin51@aol.com or call (718) 258-1163 for more details.
