Distinguished Past Student: Sandra Shirley

Sandra Marie Elizabeth Shirley is the 18th recipient of the SHPSA's Distinguished Past Student Award, in the field of Financial Services.

In January 1962, at 10 years of age, Sandra entered SHHS, having attended St. Hugh's Preparatory School. She recalls that in that year, the start of the school year was changed from January to September, and so she moved from form 1 to a special form called "transitus".

Sandra remembers schoolmates such as Jackie Henry and Pat Kentish, and is still close to many of them, including Ann Abrahams-Sage and Marjorie Barnes-Francis. She was in sixth form with Celia Christie and Marion Bullock-Ducasse. Annie Rose Kitchin was a feared form prefect and teachers, Mrs. Regna 'Smiley' Brown, Miss Marjorie Thomas, and Miss Ethel Kingdon made a lasting impression - as did the Airlie grapevine "that nobody could touch!" Dr. Inez Carnegie was principal during her school years.

In addition to her academic work, Sandra was involved in several sports, including swimming, track and field and netball. She recalls participating in the Inter-Secondary Schools Girls' Championships in the 100 and 200 yards dash, long jump and high jump - the latter "because I was so tall". She also remembers gym teacher, Miss Patsy Ritchie, who not only taught the girls gymnastics, including jumping over the horse, but also gave them lessons in ballroom dancing.

In 1972 she was awarded an Open Exhibition Scholarship to The University of the West Indies, and pursued a degree in Management Studies, specialising in Finance & Accounting. In 1984, she completed a Masters in Business Administration at PACE University in the USA, majoring in Finance & Banking.

Her career is highlighted by involvement in new ventures. In 1977 she was selected as Accounting Manager in the newly formed government entity, Jamaica Bauxite Mining Company Ltd. After a period of working and studying in New York in the 1980s, she returned to Jamaica in 1993 on the invitation of the ICD Group of Companies to assist in establishing the new entity, Sigma Investment Management Systems. Under her guidance as Managing Director of the Sigma Investment Management Systems Limited and General Manager of Sigma Unit Trust Managers Limited, Sigma grew to become the largest Unit Trust in Jamaica. She also served as Senior Vice President, Marketing and Business Development in the new firm of Manufacturers Sigma Merchant Bank, launched on July 2001 from a merger between Manufacturers Merchant Bank and the Sigma companies. As of January 2002, Sandra is NCB’s Senior Assistant General Manager – Business Development. She is also Managing Director of NCB subsidiaries, OMNI and WITCO.

In addition to her work and raising her adopted son, Nathan, Sandra is involved at the Board and Committee level in educational, financial, athletic and service organisations. Her ability to mobilise funding has often benefitted her alma mater. Through her efforts, Sigma was one of the major sponsors of the 100th anniversary banquet in November 1999. Her hobbies are reading, oil painting, golf and cookery. ¥
