Joy Angela Simons Brown is the recipient of
St. Hugh’s Past Students’ Association DISTINGUISHED Past Student AWARD for 2004.
She is being awarded for excellence in the field of
Music.
Joy received a government scholarship to enter St. Hugh’s in 1964. She was a
member of the school’s orchestra, an organizer of the inter-house music
competitions, and regular accompanist for devotions. She studied the piano and
organ with several illustrious tutors and was successful in the London Royal
School of Music piano examinations. She is currently a student of the clarinet
and flute.
Her activities at St. Hugh’s were not restricted to music however, as Joy
represented the school in netball. She was Vice-Captain of Nelson House, a form
monitor and prefect. Joy graduated from St. Hugh’s in 1970 and that year entered
the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies, where she read for a
degree in Mathematics and Chemistry.
She is an organist at Bethel Baptist Church and their former Music Director. She
directs the Guardian Life Singers and the University of Technology’s Performing
Arts Ensemble. At UTECH she also functions as music tutor. She is experienced in
choral techniques, song writing, accompaniment, composing as well as arranging
for voice.
Joy has participated in several workshops and has composed theme songs for
various organizations. She directed an international concert at the Moral
Rearmament Conference in Switzerland in 2002.
She is Managing Director of Sound of Joy Music Productions Limited, which
co-ordinates musical events, and provides live entertainment for corporate and
private clients at conferences, banquets, weddings, awards functions, and
cocktail parties among others.
As a member of the SHPSA Executive, she is responsible for the implementation of
the on-going cultural programme with the school, exposing the students to
different genres of music by arranging for prominent musicians to perform at St.
Hugh’s. These sessions are always well received.
Joy is married to Glendon and is the mother of two adult daughters, Zara and
Kamaria.
For her outstanding contribution in the field of music, the St. Hugh’s Past
Students’ Association is pleased to recognize Joy
