Tribute to Barbara MacMillan Fidelitas Jazz and More II Fi Real 2005 AGM Highlights
At the time of her death last year, Barbara Smellie MacMillan had more than 45 years of unbroken association with St. Hugh’s: as a student (at the time of the famous green uniform, and other unmentionable green items), as chemistry teacher, and as parent of three girls, Toni, Trudi, and Trixi, who were also students of SHHS.
As a past student, Barbara participated fully in the life of the school and regularly attended school events such as the Founders’ Day church service and prize-giving ceremonies, where she sat as she always did, regally, quietly, with a warm smile and pleasant demeanour. A willing and cheerful giver, she always responded to requests from the SHPSA and supported our fund-raising activities, using whatever influence she had to benefit St. Hugh’s.
At the service of thanksgiving for her life, SHPSA President Joy Gillett-Chambers and Gwyneth Davidson read a tribute to Barbara. The tribute was based on a short story that she wrote as a fourth form student, which appeared in the school magazine, The Swan, of which she was the first editor.
The short story, “The World”, reflected how meaningful Barbara’s own life would become, as she blossomed from a quiet, but talented and determined girl in school to become a deputy head girl and prefect and earned a prestigious academic scholarship to university.
Barbara’s school spirit was unmatched. For the 105th anniversary in 2004, she wore her St. Hugh’s T-shirt and, with her daughters and one grand-daughter, did the anniversary walk from Hanover Street to Leinster Road. Her dedication to SHHS is an inspiration for us to support the school she loved so well. ¥

Relationships in the age of HIV/AIDS is the theme of a “reasoning” to be hosted by the SHPSA in the audio-visual room of the SHHS on Monday, March 20 at 5 p.m., to be led by past student Dr. Tina Hylton Kong of the Ministry of Health. Past students should not miss this discussion which goes to the heart of sexual relationships today. A 30-minute video, “Fi Real” will fuel what is expected to be a lively discussion on the topic, to be chaired by past student, Dawn Williams.
The reasoning is a continuation of the HIV/AIDS awareness programme that was launched in the 105th anniversary year with the presentation by Professor Celia Christie-Samuels on Parenting in the Age of HIV/AIDS. Since March 2004, resource persons have been interacting with the SHHS staff and students to build awareness. Other members of the resource team include Dr. Leith Dunn, and Dr. Marion Bullock-Ducasse. ¥
