Principal's Report on AGM 2003

Principal’s Report at AGM

Miss Daphnie Morrison delivered a report on the school at the AGM on September 25, 2003, and below are excerpts:

“During the 2002-2003 school year, the school entered the third year of its four-year comprehensive school development programme. The action plans identified growth areas which we have reached in many categories. In addition to the main goal of increasing student achievement, a number of other goals were set. All those were seen as supporting the overall concern for increasing student achievement and retention.

In the (Caribbean Secondary Examinations Certificate) SCEC examinations, we have a 60 per cent pass rate and over in 16 out of 21 subjects taken. UWI indicated early acceptance for 38 students for 2003-2004. Fifty students were eventually accepted.

On June 25, 228 Grade 11 students received diplomas in a Valedictory Service, and on June 29, we said goodbye to 78 Grade 13 students.

We had our share of sorrow and trauma during the year, among those of the family who died was Codean Barton and her sister who lost their lives in a car accident on her way to school in October. Anna Kay Roberts and her two brothers died when they were hit by a speeding motor car one rainy morning in June, she did not live to see her name on the pass list for St. Hugh’s, her school of choice.

St. Hugh’s won the senior league in softball. The school won the Knock-Out open schools’ league and the Under 19 schools’ league in badminton. We won the award for the most improved school in the Girls and Boys National track and field championships and retained the Under 19 hockey championship.”

On Other Roads They Fare

A record number of past students attended the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on September 25, 2003 to pay tribute to retiring stalwarts of St. Hugh’s High School: vice principals Miss Daphnie Morrison, who gave 37 years of service to the school; and Mrs. Cynthia Lumsden, who served for 20 years and senior teacher and head of the Modern Languages Department, Ruby Dorman, who retired after 30 years at St. Hugh’s.

The three ladies were recognised at the AGM for their dedication to students of St. Hugh’s. Testimonies written by past students were read by Rosie Murray and plaques of appreciation were presented. Mrs. Lumsden, supported by her husband Victor and two grown children described her 20 years at St. Hugh's as being professionally wonderful. Daphnie Morrison gave her 'girls' a final English class that was met with much enjoyment and her niece was there to share the moment with her as her guests. Miss Dorman was not present and sent her regrets.

Acting Vice Principal, Mrs. Winsome Pusey, who has been at St. Hugh’s for 15 years; and teacher past student, Jasmine Campbell, assumed the role of vice principals in September. These activities coincide with the return of Principal, Yvette Smith from her two-year study leave in Canada. Testimonies to the retired teachers written by past students can be read at the Internet version of the Leinster Links, September 2003 on the SHPSA Web-site.
