3Thinking about Roles: Jess Nolan presented a paper for our consideration, outlining the various roles members might wish to take in the running of the group. It was agreed to discuss this at the next meeting. Also agreed: to keep the Coordinator informed about matters to be discussed in meetings. Hilary will ring her just after each meeting, and Haris will ring 2 weeks before, to discuss agenda matters

4 Straw-burning power station at Tansterne Joy Cain explained why she is opposed to the application. Her case is that the site is not suitable – a brownfield site with good road access in a central location should be chosen. She is in favour of the process itself, provided it involves combined heat and power. Her opposition case is that (a) no CHP facility is included (b) the site is not central to its source of supply, being so close to the coastline, and there is very poor access for heavy lorries (23 metres long) bringing the fuel (c) local supplies of fuel will not be available (farmers will not sell their straw because they either use it themselves or the price offered is too low) (d) the visual impact of the proposed 65-metre chimney will be unacceptable. As no funding is available for this project, and as the break-even time (judging by example of the plant at Ely) is 20 years, her fear is that the applicant will switch to a more polluting fuel source in future. There were questions about spoil and ash – but the application did not cover this aspect as the Council had not required the applicant to provide an Environmental Impact Assessment.
Jess suggested getting independent planning advice from Planning Aid.
It was agreed that the group would investigate the application more fully and respond to Joy.
The application can be seen online at:
http://www.eastriding.gov.uk/publicaccess/dc/DcApplication/, search for “land East of Tansterne”.
The applicant’s web site is at:www.bg-bio.com

5 Incinerator Haris wrote to the Newcastle team who provided the evidence for the Primary Care Trust to ask for details. No reply yet. She also asked Ian Brown for a copy of the PCT report (not yet received). We await the response of the FoE Legal Team, who are examining the case for going to judicial review.
6 Climate change There is to be a conference in York on Saturday 24 February.
Haris has been giving talks in secondary schools, and to the InterFaith Group.
Jess suggested various resources available from FoE eg materials for a pub quiz, postcards etc. It was decided to have a stall at Princes Quay with postcards to sign to be sent to MPs.
