Hull ECO February issue 2005

Barmston Drain

Plans have been made with Endeavour School to involve a group of Y11 pupils in planting more trees near Lockwood Street Bridge on Thursday 2nd December, 2004, from 10.00 am – 12.00 noon, as part of ‘National Tree Planting Week’. This is another step in the ‘Down the Drain’ project to enhance Barmston Drain as a wildlife corridor and pathway. Trees for this come from the city council as part of the HEYwoods initiative and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. The first part of this planting carried out on 29th February has got through the summer fairly well. Some of the bigger trees have suffered with the dry conditions despite regular watering, but the privet, hawthorn and viburnum look well settled in. The yew trees have proved too popular and have disappeared. Slight damage caused by strimming should grow out. Particularly successful has been the wildflowers. A few were introduced but most were already present on the site and freed from regular mowing have produced a colourful nectar-rich habitat.

The target now is to dig 100+ holes before December.
