Make a Difference Day
The wildlife area is being prepared for MaDD by clearing hedgerow margins ready for planting more wildflowers. There are ox-eye daisy, red campion, St John’s wort, foxgloves and lesser knapweed all waiting to be planted out. Volunteers looking for more physically demanding tasks can tackle the ‘dig a ditch’ or ‘clear the lumber’ events. Last spring, the ditch was home to many tadpoles, which had to be rescued when the dry weather came in May, so the aim is to make parts of the ditch deeper (and nearer the water supply). The lumber consists of soil, rubble, wood and glass which has been bulldozed together from the remains of disused allotments and which now needs sorting for recycling or for use as a dry stone wall and earth bank habitat. If you would like to help, or just look round, turn up on Saturday 30th October,2004, 10.00 am to 12.00 noon, at the wildlife area, Newland allotments.
