| 2008 Research Project of the HUMMINGBIRD LOVERS CLUB |
| Each year the HUMMINGBIRD LOVERS CLUB puts together a research project that will enlighten or entertain those reading it. This year we've decided to share our backyards jewels photographically. |
| Members were asked to submit photos in four categories: Western Hummingbirds (Non-Ruby Throat), Male Ruby Throat, Female Ruby Throat and Wild Poses that we have seen our hummers exhibit. A collage of the winning photos (above) became the Featured Club Photo for the month of September 2008. |

| Six members submitted photos of western hummingbirds found in their areas. Represented were Rufous Hummingbirds from Oregon, Nevada and Louisiana. Costa’s Hummingbirds from Arizona and California were featured as well as an Anna’s from Arizona. The winning photos were from Teri in CA, Frog in AZ and Katnap in OR. |

| In the Male Ruby Throat contest eight members submitted photos and the voting was fierce, just like male Ruby Throats are. Photos were submitted from Tennessee, Canada, New Jersey, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi and Kentucky. The winning photos were taken by Sunday of LA, Jenn of Ontario, Canada and Peeka of KY. |

| Nine entries were voted on in the Female Ruby Throat section from Missouri, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Arkansas, and Ontario Canada. Voting was close but the winning submitters were Maureen of NJ, Sunday of LA and Marcia of PA. Even though females are not as colorful as males, these photographers allowed all the colors of the females to shine in this Hummingbird Beauty Contest. |
| Those unique and often comical poses that hummingbirds take when preening or scratching or stretching are not easily caught on film, however ten members diligently worked at catching those rare shots this year. Photos came in from Louisiana, Canada, Arkansas, Indiana, Oregon, New Jersey, Arizona and Nevada. This final photo contest was probably the hardest of all for the members to pick a favorite. However when the votes were tallied the winners were Karen of IN, Frog of AZ and Lizz of AR. We’ve included some of the non-winners in this category scattered around the page. |
