[movie II review]

I went to see Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on the 17th of November... here's my review...

WARNING! CONTAINS SPOILERS!

The cinema was completely packed out, but I still managed to scrape tickets for the 4:00pm showing. There were loads of young children, but they were all really quiet, except for the boy behing me who kept saying everything Harry wrote in Tom's diary, bless him. So anyway, I didn't really know what to expect, because even though I'd read the book over and over, I had been told the film was completely different.

It started off in Privet Drive, I thought Dobby was great, really well done and funny when he had to punish himself. Loved the way the dropping of the cake was done, good acting from Daniel I thought. The old Ford Anglia was good aswell. Only one problem with the Burrow; I thought it should have been surrounded by normal houses rather than on it's own, it kinda took away the comic effect of it being a funny shape. Arthur Weasley, what can I say, I thought he was great. I loved the way he asked about the rubber duck, and very funny. The Floo powder was really well done too, I felt really sorry for Harry having to use it. Pity the Malfoys didn't come into the shop in Knockturn Alley. Still, the hand was a good touch.

I think one of the best performances in the film was Hermione's, there was a lot of passion in her performance and I loved watching her, Harry and Ron together, they have some great chemistry. Lockhart was hilarious and Brannagh showed another good performance alongside Julie Walters in Flourish and Blotts.

A lot was missed out from the film, and one of the main problems was that, when you read the book, the terms seem to last ages and when you've finished a whole year could have believably passed. In film, because a lot has to be missed out, the entire thing seems a bit rushed. I would have liked to see Harry and Ron slagging off Snape outside the Great Hall and then him coming up behind them and having a go at them, but that was cut out, as well most of the scenes with Colin Creevey by the looks of things.

Lucius Malfoy was excellently portrayed by Jason Isaacs, he seemed like someone who could really be loathed. We didn't see much of Justin Finch-Fletchley, but to me that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. The duelling club was great, really made me laugh. When I read the book I found it hard to picture how Harry could have looked like he had been egging the snake on, but in the film, it was really well done I thought.

I don't really want to go through the whole film, but I thought most of it was well done. I thought Moaning Myrtle was extremely annoying, but I guess she's supposed to be. Christian Coulson was an excellent choice for Tom Riddle as he was a great actor and easy on the eyes to, heh heh.

The loss of Harry's bones was funny and looked realistic too and I was on the edge of my seat throughout the Quidditch match. especially the chase between Harry, Draco, the snitch and the rogue bludger.

I thought the showdown between Harry and the basilisk was great and was really tense. I thought it was good the way Harry kept coming to comfort Ginny because she was the most important thing in the situation to Harry, beyond even his own life. Finally I loved the way Lucius kicked and abused Dobby, was really realistic and made more sense when in a twist of fate Dobby was able to abuse his master!!

Overall it was an enjoyable watch and well worth my mum's £5.50 (can you say expensive?!) and 2 and 1/2 hours of my time!!
GO SEE IT!
