I hope your heart is fluttering to get started on this show-stopper quilt, just a beautiful size for a cozy lap, or stunning wall quilt. Please read and understand each step before you cut or sew. This quilt is really easy piecing .Keeping your fabrics organized is the biggest challenge. Refer to the color chart often, it will keep you on track.

step one

organizing the fabric. press and fold all fabric take the darkest shade of all 3 colors, pin a piece of paper with “A” to the 3 pieces, repeat with all the fabric groups, “B” is the second darkest etc, “F” will only have the red. always keep these groups together-it will save on confusion later!!!

Step two

From Blue “C” cut (4) 2” strips across the width of the fabric ( for the inner border)

From purple “A” cut (4) 3 -1/2 ” strips across the width of the fabric ( for the outer border)

From purple “A” cut (5) 2-1/4 “ strips for the binding.

From your background fabric:-)

cut (1) 12 “ square

(4) 4-1/2 “ strips across the width of the fabric

(3) 4” squares

(1) 5-1/2 square

(2) 2-1/2 square

Red A cut (12) 2-3/8 “ squares, cut diagonally once for 24 half square triangles (2) 2” x 6-1/2 “

(6) 2” squares

Blue A (6) 2-3/8” squares, cut diagonally once for 12 half-square triangles (2) 2” x 6-1/2”

(3) 2” squares Purple A (6) 2-3/8” squares, cut diagonally once for 12 half square triangles (2) 2” x 6-1/2 “

(11) 2” squares (set aside 8 for the borders)

Red B (2) 8” x 2”

(2) 3-1/2” x 2”

(18) 2” squares

Blue and purple B (1) 2-3/8 “ square- cut on the diagonal for half square triangles

(9) 2” squares

Red C (2) 6-1/2 “ x 2”

(2) 3-1/2 “ x 2”

(14) 2” squares

Blue and Purple C (1) 6-1/2” x 2”

(1) 3-1/2 “x 2”

(5) 2” squares

Red D (16) 2” squares

Blue and Purple D (1) 2-3/8” square- cut once on diagonal for half square triangles

(5) 2” squares

Red E (4) 3-1/2 “ x 2”

(8) 2” squares

Blue E ( 2) 2-3/8” squares, cutting diagonally to make half square triangles (13) 2” squares (set 12 aside for borders)

Purple E (2) 2-3/8” squares, cut diagonally for triangles

(1) 2” square

Red F (4) 2” squares

organize your fabric by putting all you cut pieces into baggies labeled A, B, C etc.

Taking all the triangles cut from the 2-3/8 “ squares , pair them and join them along the long diagonal side ( be careful- this is bias) making the pairs as below.

Note- you will not use all the triangles yet. when the pairs are joined lay them back down in the baggie they correspond to i.e. a Red A/ background will go in the “A” baggie, a Red A/purple C will go in the “C” baggie

(1) red A/ purple D

(1) red A/ blue D

(2) red A/ purple E

( 2) red A/blue E.

step four

assembling the hearts.

this is done in vertical rows. make each row first, then carefully follow the order of assembly for the rows, because some rows have to be joined, then background triangles added before joining to the other rows.

refer to the chart to ensure that the triangles at the top and bottom of rows are facing the correct direction.

As the piecing order is the same for opposite rows , the instructions for each row is given, with its matching opposite in parenthesis . i.e. row 1 and 22 are the same, just in different colors, therefore instructions for row 1 ( &22) are given. CHECK YOUR TRIANGLE DIRECTIONS!!!!!!

Press all seam allowances for even numbered row UP, all odd rows DOWN .This helps the rows to nestle together later.

All lists are from top to bottom, in the order given

Alright, the worst is over, check the directions off all your triangles and half square peices NOW!!

Assembling the rows

With the rows being pressed up and down , the rows should nestle when joined, pin each in a couple of matching seams, and you are good to go !!

the triangles will have little “bunny ears” when joined right sides together, this is normal, start sewing right at the little “v”.

join rows 1 &2 , also rows 21 & 22. add a background triangle by cutting the background 4” squares diagonally once to make triangles. Add these triangles to the TOP of the joined rows.

add rows 3,4,5,6 and 7 . also add rows 20,19,18,17 and 16 to the joined rows 21&22

Join rows 8 and 9 add a triangle cut from the 4” background squares to the BOTTOM of rows 8 & 9. repeat for rows 15 and 16.

Join rows 10 and 11, add a background triangle from the 4 “ squares to the BOTTOM of these rows. repeat for rows 12 and 13.

Join row 8/9 and 10/11. Add a triangle cut from the 5-1/2 “ background squares to the TOP of rows 9,10,11. repeat for rows 12/13/14/15.

Now you can join all your row segments together.

Cut the large background square in half diagonally and add to the bottom of your blue and purple hearts- be careful with those bias edges.

Press the heart segment carefully and measure ACCURATELY the width of your heart panel, through the CENTER of the panel .

Out of the 4-1/2 background strips cut earlier- cut the length of the strip the exact measurement of the width of your heart panel. Add these to the top and bottom of your heart panel.

now measure the HEIGHT of your heart panel ( with the upper and lower background pieces added) cut the remaining 4-1/2 strips this length and add to the sides.

Re-measure the width of your quilt . Out of the 2” strips of Blue you cut earlier for the borders , cut 2 strips the length you just measured .add to the top and bottom , easing fullness if necessary.

re-measure the height of your quilt, cut the remaining blue 2” strips this length, add the Blue E 2” squares set aside earlier to the ends of these strips, add to the sides of your quilt, matching seams at the corners, and easing fullness if necessary.

make cornerstone blocks by pairing blue E and Purple A 2” squares , make 8 pairs. join these pairs to complete 4 four-patch blocks . they should now measure 3-1/2 “ square.

measure thru the center of the quilt for your new width, cut (2) of the 3-1/2 border strips of Purple A set aside earlier. add to the top and bottom of the quilt.

measure your new height. cut the remaining border strips this length, add the four patch blocks to the ends, and add to the quilt .

CONGRATULATIONS your quilt top is now complete. Refer to the enclosed booklet for tips on finishing your quilt. Enclosed are the quilting designs I used to make hearts-a - flutter. You can use, adapt these or do what ever makes you happy.
