Huna 101

David Kaonohiokala Bray tradition

David K. Bray claimed to be the last initiated Kahuna of Hawai'i. I read Mr. Bray's book "The Kahuna Religion of Hawaii," and was very disappointed.

There are two men I trust, and both of them knew Max Freedom Long. Based on the information I learned from these two gentlemen, and reading his book, I feel it is safe to say that Mr. Bray was a Kahuna in name only.

Scott Cunningham Tradition

Mr. Cunningham obviously did his research because his book "Hawaiian Religion and Magic" which was later re-released as "Hawaiian Magic And Spirituality" has one of the most complete lists of the assorted Akua, a rather complete list of assorted kind of kahunas, information about the menehune (the little people of Hawai'i), the night marchers, and MUCH more.

My problem with Mr. Cunningham's work is that he practiced the "Wicca" religion, and in a few places his point of view regarding worshiping the Akua slips in. I work with my 'Aumakua; the Po’e 'Aumakua, and I have worked with the Akua only two or three times, but the ONLY deity that I worship is the Creator.

Shelley Kaehr Tradition

Ms. Kaehr wrote the book "Origins of HUNA."

In my opinion; this is the WORST HUNA book ever written. As far as I am concerned, this book, and her opinions, are a complete waste of paper and ink.

1. Ms. Kaehr postulates the myth that Pa'ao introduced idolatry to the Hawai’ians.

Pa'ao introduced the worship of Ku, and offering human sacrifice to Kuka'ilimoku.

2. Ms. Kaehr postulates the myth that MFL and William Tufts Brigham could not have met.

FACT: MFL went to the islands in 1917, and Dr. Brigham did not retire from the Bishop museum until 1918.

3. Ms. Kaehr states that MFL told a lot of lies about Hawai’ian spirituality.

MFL was a sincere dedicated researcher that made a few mistakes about Hawai’ian spirituality because of his imperfect understanding, and the Hawai’ians would not discuss spiritual matters with him. I freely state where I believe MFL made errors; but I do NOT call him a liar.

4. She postulates the theory that the publisher of MFL's first book "Recovering The Ancient Miracles," was bombed because of lies he told.

Excuse me?

Apparently Ms. Kaehr is not aware that MFL's book "Recovering the Ancient Magic" was being published in London, England. Germany and England were at war. This war expanded into what is called World War II today.

5. Her research for this book was MFL communicating to her through a Ouija board, and later Automatic writing.

This is NOT credible research for a book in my opinion.

6. And other examples. I recommend that people allow this book to collect dust on the book shelf.

Serge Kahili King tradition

When I began my study of HUNA, I encountered some of Mr. King’s books "Mastering Your Hidden Self," "Urban Shaman," "Kahuna Healing," etc. At first I supported this author and recommended some of his works, because I did not know any better at the time. Later I read other material, and gained first-hand experience in the HUNA system, and learned that Mr. King's vision of HUNA looked nothing like my firsthand experiences, but my experiences matched other HUNA authors such as MFL, Allan P. Lewis, Clark Wilkerson, Charlotte Berney, Arlyn J. MacDonald, and others.

I could write a paper explaining where and why I believe Mr. King to be in error, but I will spare you that and list four reasons why I do not recommend ANY HUNA books by this author.

1. He mixes HUNA with Shamanism from assorted cultures.

2. He adds a lot of new-age material to his books.

3. He lists 7 components in a human being; when there are 10.

4. After reading “Kahuna Healing” I am confident this man stretches the truth (lies). This book is one of the main factors why I no longer supported this author.

Max Freedom Long Tradition

Max Freedom Long was a sincere, dedicated researcher who spent the rest of his life (52 years) trying to reclaim the secret that Kahunas knew. I like to say that Max was a dedicated researcher, but in a few places he added 2 and 2 and reached the total of 6.

Max had several things working against him.

1. Max was a ha'ole, and the Hawaiians would not talk to him for fear of persecution. It had only been 97 years after the "Christian" missionaries did their "good deed" and outlawed the Hawai’ians spiritual practices, and "civilized the savages"

2. Max had been raised "Christian," and for some reason connected the dots where they did not go because of similar feats between Jesus and the kahunas.

MFL was under the impression that there had to be a direct line of teachers for this knowledge. If this were so, then the people would use the same or similar names for the energy, and the three selves. See section 1 where I list assorted names various cultures gave the three selves. Furthermore; the Hawai’ians called universal life-force energy (ULE) “mana,” the Israelites called ULE “Ruach” (meaning breath of life), and the Egyptians called ULE “Sekkem.”

My opinion is that various mystics around the world would go into silence (meditation), and try to understand the world around them, and the nature of the soul; then they gave things names according to their understanding and language.

3. MFL was working from a Hawai’ian / English dictionary that had been printed in 1865 (only 45 years after the missionaries arrived), and I say that it is improbable that the closed-minded ha'oles were incapable of understanding the nuances of the Hawaiian language.

4. Max either accidentally or intentionally overlooked the role of the Akua (the assorted Deities that Hawai'ians acknowledged. I will not speculate on the reason why the Akua and other higher powers were ignored.

Clark Wilkerson Tradition

Mr. Wilkerson wrote "Hawaiian Magic" in 1968, and the book has long been out of print. Over all, the book is VERY good and seems to have escaped the attention of MOST HUNA authors. Mr. Wilkerson lived in Hawai'i for many years and learned from a kahuna.

I have two problems with the book:

1. He includes channeled material. Some of material rings true to me, and some does not.

2. In a few places he talks of the Lord Thinkers of Venus, UFOs from Jupiter, etc.

I am not dismissing his comments as false out of hand (because I myself have had some out of the ordinary experiences). I just have not had similar experiences, and those words do not have the ring of truth for me.

If you listen to the concepts of what he calls HUNA science, and ignore the UFOs, and Lord Thinkers of Venus; this book is superb!

If I were forced to limit my HUNA library to only one book; this is the book I would keep.

Laura Kealoha Yardley tradition

Another HUNA practitioner I know told me that Ms. Yardley teaches HUNA by passing HUNA attunements. I have not communicated with Ms. Yardley, but I did read her book "The Heart Of Huna,”; but her book did not mention HUNA attunements.

Attunements are used in the various forms or Reiki, Seichim, and probably other systems. I am a Master/Teacher or higher in five forms of Reiki (Karuna, Magnussa Phoenix, Tibetan, Usui Shiki, and Usui Shiki Ryoho), and a Master of Seichim, and Seventh Facet Seichim, and Zhan Zhuang (Jan Jong) Qigong.

Attunements are wonderful for opening the energy pathways in the body, but I sincerely doubt a 15-minute attunement will clear the complexes and fixations the Unihipili has been building since your parents, and other authority figures taught you to feel guilty or ashamed of you behavior.
