![]() David Kaonohiokala Bray traditionDavid K. Bray claimed to be the last initiated Kahuna of Hawai'i. I read Mr. Bray's book "The Kahuna Religion of Hawaii," and was very disappointed. There are two men I trust, and both of them knew Max Freedom Long. Based on the information I learned from these two gentlemen, and reading his book, I feel it is safe to say that Mr. Bray was a Kahuna in name only.
Scott Cunningham TraditionMr. Cunningham obviously did his research because his book "Hawaiian Religion and Magic" which was later re-released as "Hawaiian Magic And Spirituality" has one of the most complete lists of the assorted Akua, a rather complete list of assorted kind of kahunas, information about the menehune (the little people of Hawai'i), the night marchers, and MUCH more. My problem with Mr. Cunningham's work is that he practiced the "Wicca" religion, and in a few places his point of view regarding worshiping the Akua slips in. I work with my 'Aumakua; the Po’e 'Aumakua, and I have worked with the Akua only two or three times, but the ONLY deity that I worship is the Creator.
Shelley Kaehr TraditionMs. Kaehr wrote the book "Origins of HUNA." In my opinion; this is the WORST HUNA book ever written. As far as I am concerned, this book, and her opinions, are a complete waste of paper and ink.
Serge Kahili King traditionWhen I began my study of HUNA, I encountered some of Mr. King’s books "Mastering Your Hidden Self," "Urban Shaman," "Kahuna Healing," etc. At first I supported this author and recommended some of his works, because I did not know any better at the time. Later I read other material, and gained first-hand experience in the HUNA system, and learned that Mr. King's vision of HUNA looked nothing like my firsthand experiences, but my experiences matched other HUNA authors such as MFL, Allan P. Lewis, Clark Wilkerson, Charlotte Berney, Arlyn J. MacDonald, and others. I could write a paper explaining where and why I believe Mr. King to be in error, but I will spare you that and list four reasons why I do not recommend ANY HUNA books by this author.
Max Freedom Long TraditionMax Freedom Long was a sincere, dedicated researcher who spent the rest of his life (52 years) trying to reclaim the secret that Kahunas knew. I like to say that Max was a dedicated researcher, but in a few places he added 2 and 2 and reached the total of 6. Max had several things working against him.
Clark Wilkerson TraditionMr. Wilkerson wrote "Hawaiian Magic" in 1968, and the book has long been out of print. Over all, the book is VERY good and seems to have escaped the attention of MOST HUNA authors. Mr. Wilkerson lived in Hawai'i for many years and learned from a kahuna. I have two problems with the book:
I am not dismissing his comments as false out of hand (because I myself have had some out of the ordinary experiences). I just have not had similar experiences, and those words do not have the ring of truth for me. If you listen to the concepts of what he calls HUNA science, and ignore the UFOs, and Lord Thinkers of Venus; this book is superb! If I were forced to limit my HUNA library to only one book; this is the book I would keep.
Laura Kealoha Yardley traditionAnother HUNA practitioner I know told me that Ms. Yardley teaches HUNA by passing HUNA attunements. I have not communicated with Ms. Yardley, but I did read her book "The Heart Of Huna,”; but her book did not mention HUNA attunements. Attunements are used in the various forms or Reiki, Seichim, and probably other systems. I am a Master/Teacher or higher in five forms of Reiki (Karuna, Magnussa Phoenix, Tibetan, Usui Shiki, and Usui Shiki Ryoho), and a Master of Seichim, and Seventh Facet Seichim, and Zhan Zhuang (Jan Jong) Qigong. Attunements are wonderful for opening the energy pathways in the body, but I sincerely doubt a 15-minute attunement will clear the complexes and fixations the Unihipili has been building since your parents, and other authority figures taught you to feel guilty or ashamed of you behavior. ![]() © Copyright 2003 |
