Chances are you are a democracy-loving zombie. Our government has been spoon-feeding us with pro-democracy propaganda starting at around Wilson ("...making the world safe for democracy") Can you tell me what is so great about democracy? Can you tell me what democracy is? Better yet, what is the difference between a democracy and a republic? Skip the first one for now...
A democracy is rule by the people elected by the people. A republic is mostly rule by certain people elected by people elected by the people. See the difference? Mob rule versus representative government. We know mob rule is bad...see the French Revolution. Well that's what democracy really is. Alright boys and girls, can anyone guess what we are supposed to be? Yes, Billy? A republic! Good, Billy! Wow, this is easier than I thought! Let's look at some fun quotes from the founders. What did they think about the two options?
Democracies:
Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their death.
-James Madison
The general object was to produce a cure for the evils under which the United States labored; that in tracing these evils to their origins, every man had found it in the turbulence and follies of democracy.
-Founding Father Edmund Randolph (on the ppurpose of the Constitutional Convention)
Republics:
"We've given you a republic, if you can keep it." (Benjamin Franklin after the Constitutional Convention)
Hmmmmm. I picked up two things: They were not big on democracy. They gave us a republic and meant for us to preserve it. Must mean they liked republics. Its in the pledge of allegiance as well. More research would reveal endless support of a republic. More l8r.
