Question: Can girls join the Scouts?

Answer: It depends on the section. It is not possible for girls to join 1st Pocklington Beavers or the Cubs at the moment. The Scout Section is does not object on principle but allowing girls in depends on the leadership situation (in other words we must have a female leader at the time). Young women are welcome in the Venture Scout Unit. In the near future a new section, the Explorer Scouts (for 15 - 18 year olds) will be set up; this will most likely welcome young women. However, the situation is constantly being reviewed and may well change if enough girls want to join. Contact the webmaster and we'll see what is possible. If you can't join 1st Pocklington there maybe another local Group that you can join - or we can put you in touch with our sister Association - the Guides.

Question: Do I have to wear a uniform?

Answer: Yes! The Scout Association is just changing all of its uniforms - for more info check out http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/hq-info/uniform/index.htm The uniform is an important part of our history and identity and we are proud to wear it.

Question: Can I do the Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Scouts?

Answer: You will be able to soon. The new Scout sections (Explorer Scouts and the Scout Network (for young people between 18 and 25)) will be able to do the D of E Awards as part of their Scouting activities. If you are already doing the D of E Awards now then anything that you do counts towards your Scouting Awards.

Question: What age can I join?

Answer: Beavers 6 - 8 years old, Cubs 8 - 10.5 years old, Scouts 10.5 -15.5 years old, Ventures 15.5 -21 years old. Please be aware, thhough that there are waiting lists to join Beavers and Cubs so contact the webmaster to get on the list. For all sections (other than Beavers) priority is given to young people that are already invested in the Movement.

Question: Does the Scout Movement have religious affiliations?

Answer: Some Scout Groups are closely linked with religious organisations (for example the Salvation Army). However, most are not. 1st Pocklington has no formal ties with any religious organisation. Members of the Group are, however, expected to develop spiritually as they grow older and to examine their faith and beliefs. The Scout Movement as a whole has no particular affiliation and we welcome members from any religious background, be it Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism or any other faith. The words of the Scout Promise can be altered to reflect a Scout's religious beliefs. The Scout Movement has always been proud of the fact that it welcomes young people from any race, culture or creed.

Question: Can young people with disabilities join 1st Pocklington?

Answer: We welcome everyone. However, if specialist care is needed we may need to ask parental help on certain activities. We will always do our best to accommodate everyone's needs so contact us and we'll discuss things. For severely disabled youngsters there is a special needs Scout Group in HULL - if you contact us we can put you in touch.

Question: Do say "dib dib dib, dob dob dob?

Answer: NO!

If you have any other questions please email the webmaster and I'll do my best to answer!
