Abstract

Topographic Database and Geo-Mythological Locality in Pongso no Tao, Lanyu

The narratives of Yami topography represent how the ancestors have made Lanyu island from an unknown space into a well-naming place, which becomes wide-distributed by Yami human groups during the historic migration. To analyze the principles of landscape naming, using cases of naming the past developing villages, there are three keystone rules including place naming according ecology, according geography as well as according human names. Especially the last principle of place naming according human names demonstrates that the human action deeply shape the quality and characteristic of Yami landscape, such as the phenomena of human-land name sharing in the Yami mid-migratory stage.

The social function of human-land name sharing, as a rite to mediate land and society, associates with the Yami beliefs of spatial fortune and oral magic in their cultural ideology. This land-group bounding rite could construct a new identity to solve conflicts between pre-occupant landholders and outside dominant hierarchy, as well as to penetrate conflicts in order to develop a broader moral logic.

In the symbolic dimension, the name sharing rites can be an augur determined by land magic. It helps different social groups cross stratum of land-human interaction through changing vision of worldview. In addition, the cultural core of name sharing rites responds to the meaning of human naming, in terms of new-birth, self identification and magic augur. Land as a medium of practical augur can not only be where complex sign displays, but also a site that multiplicity encounters. Since the complicated social working between reality and symbols, the landscape, human body and flying fish in Yami society cannot become a simple map or calendar to read.
