I took a Literature for Elementary School course in college (I was once an elem-ed major). These children's titles are those that I personally have enjoyed and they only skim the surface.

Just As Long As We're Together - Judy Blume

The Lorax - Dr. Seuss

The Giving Tree - Shel Silverstein

Quintillius: The Star That Shone - William B. Thielking (I couldn't find this book on Amazon ...how awful!)

Flip the Flying Possum - Noela Young (Couldn't find this book on Amazon either, though at least the author showed up!)

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears - West African folktale retold by Verna Aardema, illus. Leo and Diane Dillon - 1976 Caldecott Medal winner

The House on Deer-Track Trail - Marty Kelly, illus. by Ronald Himler

Little Women - Louisa May Alcott

Five Little Peppers - Margaret Sidney

El Blanco - The Legend of the White Stallion - Rutherford Montgomery

Oh, the Places You'll Go! - Dr. Seuss - This book is pretty much about the highs and lows in life. It makes a great graduation gift for people of all ages (or a gift for someone who's embarking on an adventure).

The Westing Game - Ellen Raskin - 1979 Newbery Medal winner- Boston Globe-Horn Book Award

Henry and Ribsy - Beverly Cleary

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH - Robert C. O'Brien - 1972 Newbery Medal winner

The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe - C. S. Lewis. If I've managed to get this right, this is the first book according to publishing date, in theChronicles of Narnia series. However, The Magician's Nephew is the first in chronological order according to plot.

A Wrinkle in Time - Madeleine L'Engle - 1963 Newbery Medal winner. This book is the first book in a series of four called The Time Quartet.

The Seal Oil Lamp - Dale De Armond, pub 1988 by The Sierra Club. I have no affiliation with The Sierra Club.

The Snowy Day - Ezra Jack Keats - 1963 Caldecott Medal winner

The Bracelet - Yoshiko Uchida, illus. by Janna Yardley

Camels Are Meaner Than Mules - Mary Calhoun, illus. by Herman B. Vestal - This book was hilarious! Follow a Union soldier as he tries to understand his camel. This was a period when The Union tried bringing camels in to use in the desert instead of horses.

Captains Courageous - Rudyard Kipling, adapted by Mitsu Yamamoto, illus. by Ken Landgraf - Harvey is a rich, spoiled teen who is swept overboard from the deck of an oceanliner on its way to Europe. He is rescued and made to work for his keep by Captain Disko Troop who owns the fishing schooner. Harvey learns a little about life while he's with them.

Return to Harmony - Janette Oke and T. Davis Bunn - Jodie befriends a smaller girl, named Bethan, who has a lazy eye. Each girl has her own problems but as the girls grow, they learn to face their problems together. When Jodie leaves for college, a whole new world confronts her.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - J. K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - J. K. Rowling

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit - Judith Kerr. Illus. by the author. - This is a great book about two Jewish children named Max & Anna. The story begins in Germany right before World War I, when Hitler is beginning his politics. I wouldn't really call it an Anne Frank type novel.

Frog and Toad Together - Arnold Lobel - 1973 Newbery Honor book

Frog and Toad Are Friends - Arnold Lobel - 1971 Caldecott Honor

Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky - Elphinstone Dayrell. Illus. by Blair Lent - 1969 Caldecott Honor

Charlotte's Web - E.B. White - Follow the friendship of a pig named Wilbur and Charlotte the spider - 1953 Newbery Honor book

Anne of Green Gables - L.M. Montgomery - If you're lucky, you might be able to catch the movie series on PBS.

The Green Book - Jill Paton Walsh - When Earth is no longer a fit place to live, people leave on ships taking supplies but very few personal items as there is little room. Father, Joe, Sarah and Pattie are one family among many that land on a planet they think will support life. The green book is one of the items this family takes with them.

Are You There God? It's Me Margaret - Judy Blume - This is a somewhat controversial book as it addresses the issue of religion. Margaret's parents have different religious backgrounds and she doesn't know which one to choose as her own.
