Spindle Galaxy (NGC3115)

Spindle Galaxy (NGC3115)
The Spindle Galaxy NGC3115 has been classified as type S0, one of the relatively few lenticular galaxies. These galaxies appear to be a hybrid between normal spirals with lots of dust in the orbital plane, and ellipticals which do not show any significant amounts of dust. The image clearly shows NGC3115 as a flat lens-shaped galaxy, without any trace of dust lines. The distance to this galaxy is estimated to be about 22 million ly.
