Mars

Mars is showing many interesting surface features in this image (Move the mouse cursor over the image to see the planet disc without labels).
To the right is the mighty Valles Marineris, a mere wrinckled line in this image but actually the largest canyon in the Solar System. The walls rises to 10km above the canyon floor and the canyon streches for 4000km along the planets equator, being several hundred kilometers wide in places.
In the lower left is the south polar cap visible as a small light spot. The polar caps on Mars changes size according to the seasons and this image was taken during the summer on Mars' southern hemisphere.
Also visible are numerous dark plains or 'Mare', similar to the dark areas visible on the Moon.
