15 JUNE 2000 BECKHAM ABUSE 'A DISGRACE' - WISE
England midfield man Dennis Wise has branded supporters who jeered the Manchester United contingent in Eindhoven on Monday as 'a disgrace'. Old Trafford hero David Beckham was pictured gesturing to the crowd as he made his way off the pitch after being subjected to seething abuse relating to his wife Victoria and son Brooklyn. Fellow Red Devils Gary and Phil Neville were also lambasted as they made their way down the tunnel after the 3-2 defeat by Portugal. "It is disappointing that they wanted to have a go at the Manchester United boys," said the Chelsea skipper who is hoping to replace Steve McManaman in the side to face Germany in Eindhoven on Saturday. "David Beckham is a talented player for England yet people seem to want to have a go at him and his family. It is a disgrace really." Beckham is regularly singled out for abuse during Premiership matches for his club and recently England internationals have become littered with anti-Manchester United chanting, despite their players making up the bulk of Kevin Keegan's squad. "David has done extremely well for his country yet people want to abuse him and the other players going down the tunnel," said Wise. "These guys have just been trying their hardest and doing their best for England and they get that off some people. "I suppose David is used to all that now because he gets it every week, poor fellow. "It must be very difficult to handle but he knows what he has to do. "He has his family and friends and people that are close to him. "I don't suppose he is that bothered about what other people say but it is not very nice to hear." |
