How to Build a Hydrogen Electrolyzer
"My Hydrogen Experiments Part 1"
Last summer I spent some time researching ideas for making my own hydrogen, here is what I came up with. It's a basic electrolyzer made out of three inch PVC pipe. How it works: the left wire is positive, the right is negative, I use a 12 volt car battery charger for the power source. It draws around 2 amps. The power goes into two stainless steal plates (stainless steal is preferred so that it doesn't corrode). The electrolyzer is filled through the center pipe with a solution of distilled water and sodium hydroxide about a 4:1 ratio by weight 4 parts water 1 part sodium hydroxide (also known as lye). I power it up and out the top comes hydrogen on the right and oxygen on the left. About one gallon per hour.
I have the two hoses going out to tanks. The way the tanks work is that they are filled with water and placed upside-down in a bucket filled with water. The hose is aloud to bubble up into the tank. Pushing away the water and filling the tank. The smaller one to the left is oxygen, the bigger one to the right is hydrogen. One gallon isn't much but read on and you will see that you can do some pretty cool things with even small amounts of hydrogen.
