• There are presently three books published: "A Game of Thrones", "A Clash of Kings" and "A Storm of Swords". The fourth book in the series. "A Feast for Crows" will be published in late 2004. Martin's writing stands out for its gritty realism, his extraordinary breadth and detail in world-building, and the deep, involved characterisation that he gives to its inhabitants.
• Magical elements in the books are subtle, and behind the scenes, allowing the plotting, back-stabbing, and warring of the main characters take centre-stage.

"Greywater watch" is named after the castle of House Reed.

• In the book, the POV of Brandon Stark, and his exploits with Jojen and Meera Reed, was my favourite narrative thread.
• The front-page picture shows the story of the Knight of the Laughing Tree, which was told by Meera along their way to the Wall. Serious debates are still ongoing on who the Knight really is!
