Thurs

Thurs is attributed the phonetic value of th, it means giant. The Old English word for this rune was "thorn", which quite obviously means thorn, as in a thorn bush. In Germanic times this rune was called "thurisaz" which meant the strong one or a giant.

In the Gothic Rune Row this rune was called "thyth" or "thuith", and its equivalent in the alphabet was "thauris". "Thyth" means crystal sphere, whilst "thauris" means the good one. Obviously these meanings give us different interpretations for the following correspondances, so the following correspondances all relate to Thurs and runes with similar meanings, the Gothic meanings are here just for completeness.

In the Danish Younger Thurs is called "thuris" meaning giant, whilst the Swedo-Norwegian Younger doesn't deviate from the original Old Norse meanings.

In the Armanen system this rune is linked to the third of the eighteen spells from the havamal, that one being the description of the war fetter. In this system is bares the name "thor" or "dorn"

Thurs' general meaning is usually taken as being that of giants, and in some cases that of Thor. In my opinion this rune is related to Thor but the name refers to a thorn. The giants were thorns in the side of the gods, Thor never was. Just because the name sounds like it could be similar to Thor's doesn't mean it is.

Thurs' primary power is related to Change and it is linked to the element of Change, Fire. Thurs' polarity is that of masculine and its colour is Red, the colour of strength, power and vitality. Thurs' essential oil is claimed to be Frankincense.

This rune is linked with the Rose bush, teaching us that no matter how beautiful an object may seem, we must always beware of the thorn, whether we can see it or not, whether it exists or not. It is also linked with the Hawthorn tree, in its protective aspect and as such this rune is linked with the rune Odal and the Elf Oberon. It also has a minor connection with the Blackberry bush and the houseleek.

This runes main tree correspondance is Blackthorn. Blackthorn grows freely and abundantly, seemingly without stopping for anything. It also forms a protective barrier by doing so, thus representing one form of Thurs. It is also the tree from which Gandr rods and Nithstong where carved from.

This rune is linked with Hel. It is also linked with Nithhogg, the terrying serpent that gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil trying to fell that great tree.

This rune is linked with the Giants as we have already seen, it is primarily linked with the Moldthurses, earth-giants. We have also already mentioned it is linked with Thor. This rune represents the power of Thor. It is his belt of strength, but ultimatly it is his hammer. Mjollnir, is one of the most powerful weapons of the gods. Forged by the dwarves it is a perfect hammer except the handle is slightly to short. Mjollnir represents lightning, and as this rune represents Mjollnir this rune also represents lightning. Lightning is a fertilising force and a force of change.

In divinitry magic this rune represents protection, most likely protection from a source you know to have strength but not to be allie with you. Also do not rely on this protection to develop into friendship. This rune also represents important decisions that need to be made now. It can mean good news or a hinderance has suddenly become a blessing.

In systems using reversed runes this rune carries these messages in that position. It can be a forboder of bad news. It can tell you that a decision that you've made was a hasty one and requires rethinking. It can also tell you not to get to close to something as you will get stung by its 'thorns'. If linked with Odal it could be saying that you are the one who is 'thorny'.

When used it cursing magic this rune is used to change things around the person for the worst. It gives them a lump of bad news at once and can render them defenceless.

In some cursing systems, notedly that of Gerd versus Skirnir this rune is used to change other runes to represent purely negative aspects of their normally meaning. To do so and to us against some one else is considered as cursing. Write three thurs' then follow by three runes which you would like to distort against your target.

In Lim healing this rune corresponds with the heart.

Thurs is good in any form of combat be it magic attacks or physical defense. It is both an offensive aid and a defensive aid. However it is an active defense, this means that it still hurts your opponents whilst protecting you but protection is its primary goal. This rune protects from sharp weapons and from nature.

This rune also weakens enemies powers both magical and physical. It can be used to shatter anothers destructive energies whether in the present or those projected out to alter the future.

As Mjollnir, Thurs is a fertility symbol. The lightning of Mjollnir regenerate the ground as well as sorches it. As such this rune represents rebirth after and only through devastation and destruction. In this sense it allows us to feign death or magical death only to arise like the pheonix afterwards. Hence allowing us to run away if overpowered and come back again to fight stronger and wiser. Also connected to the ideas of rebirth and regeneration are those of healing, and Thurs has its place in healing magic also.

Thorns upon the Rose bush teaches us to look beyond beauty for the thorns. But the rune Thurs gives us the powers to hide the very same thorns.

This rune combines opposites together, it could even combine Fire and Ice. When used in rune scripts Thurs combines the powers of the other runes together.

Thurs is the primal masculine strength, masculine as in the masculine ideal not just men for women can be masculine to. It is the earliest masculine howl at the stars. It embodies wild men and the primeval masculine strength and musculine violence, it is raw strength and as such breaks resistance. It is a danger to modern day females who are much removed from their masculine side and can be used to harm them to a mucher greater degree than the damage would be if it was done to a male.

A useful rune for just punishment, as Norse/Germanic peoples threw criminals into thorns as a punishment.

As the thorny spindle from Sleeping Beauty this rune can be used to put others to sleep. It is also the power that wakes them up again. It can also be used to awaken hidden and secret mysteries. Thurs also has much to be explored with inside the realms of Shapeshifting.

This rune allows you to direct your megin force, a personal force which possessing will drive you towards success and good fortune. This rune give endurance and character. It also increases your potency,.

Linked again to lightning is this runes ability to be projected. Using it as such we can project it into the future to destroy future events which seem unpleasant to us. This rune brings sudden changes without warning and can significantly alter the course of events. As such it has its place in love magic as a last resort. It can also be used to bring the hearts desire into being. In a similar vein this rune brings choices and helps us gain true free will.

If my need grows dire,
For binding my deadly enemies,
I dull the blades of my foes,
Neither weapon nor deception will bite for them."
