USE YOUR OLD PC AS INFRARED REMOTE CONTROL TERMINAL

Last Update: August 26, 2002

Ever want to control your TV, VCR, mini hi-fi, or air conditioner from the internet?  Now you can do so with this infrared remote control terminal.  This is not the newest idea, but the nice thing is that it can be done with no extra cost, except your old PC.  Once you have the infrared signal scanned into the PC, all you need is a resistor and an infrared LED connected to the RS232 port of the PC.  You can readily get an infrared LED from your old TV remote control.  The infrared signal scanner can be built with a few electronics components, and it can be shared with other people.

Software:

Windows 98 Second Edition (Web page)
Winsamp infrared remote software (Download) (Web page)

Methods:

Visit BlankFrank's home page to understand the detail of how to build the infrared sampling and playback circuit.  You do not need to follow exactly, for example, I drive the infrared LED directly from the RS232 port without an external battery.  This program works very well with all the audio video equipment I have, and you can control it from the internet or from a schedule task.  If you don't use Windows 98, you can even run the program off of a floppy disk, for example, with batch commands.

This is the hardware I have for the IR Sampler Circuit and the IR Transmit Circuit.  It so happened that I have a Mindpath Pocket Point (Web page) infrared receiver, and all I need is to get the power from the correct pins and convert the output signal to the correct polarity.
