"Little Shop of Horrors" is the sad and scary, but very funny tale of a nerdish boy and his attemps to find love while the plant he "discovered" sweet talks its way into taking over the world. Seymour has the "fourtune" of finding a rare new plant immediately following a solar eclipes. To the skid row orphan, who was raised by Mushnik the plant shop owner, the fame from his find is something new. He's a stereotypical boy in love with the girl who also works for Mushnik, Audry, who he ends up naming the plant, Audry II, after. The problem is that Audry, who reveals her love for Seymour in the haunting "Somewhere That's Green," is trapped in an abusive relationship with a torture-loving, gas inhaling dentist. Seymour's problems increase when Audry II won't grow unless fed human blood. He realizes that he can't keep feeding it his own because he starts running out. Just then, a little voice starts begging, "Feed me." It's Audry II. The poor little thing says it's starving and hints that Seymour should put both Audreys out of their mysery by killing the dentist. Seymour agonizes over it, but when he finally visits the dentist, the man ends up doing the hard part himself: the dentist gets stuck in his gas mask and all Seymour has to do is not help him get out! Act I ends with a growing Audrey II happily devouring the parts. In Act II, things are looking up for Seymour: he's becoming even more famous and Audrey can finally be with him. The only problem is that Mushnik has found some clues and thinks Seymour is a murderer! To avoid being turned in, he tricks Mushnik into reaching into the plant. Audrey II of course catches on and enjoys her meal. The whole incident disturbs Seymour and Audrey II is now, in her booming voice, saying "Feed me!" once more. So, he decides to kill Audrey II right after the next picture for the paper tomorrow. But Audrey II overhears him and makes some plans of her own. That night Audrey is mysteriously drawn to the shop. The plant weakly asks her for some water. Naturally, the watering turns into a meal. Seymour runs in to find his love halfway into the enormous mouth. In her dying words she asks that her body be fed to the plant because "That way we'll always be together." and she can continue to help him by bringing him success. He obeys her last wishes then confronts Audrey II. He sees through the gigantic plant's plans now. In his mad anger, he charges right into the mouth, to destroy it from the inside and be with Audrey. Finding the shop empty and looking to get rich himself, a man comes in and takes clippings from Audrey II. They're sent to homes around the world where the the events you've just witnessed will repeat themselves! And on this note the play ends -- DON'T FEED THE PLANTS!!! |
