Thank you for your inquiry regarding our Labrador Retrievers. If you have not yet done so please view our dogs on the website after reading this information. When viewing the website be sure to check out the "Breedings" page as that is where you will get information regarding upcoming litters. Just to give you some general information on our dogs; there are three of us that make up HySpire Labrador Retrievers, (myself) Judy Heim, Vonnie Russell, and Lisa Da Ross. We started breeding dogs together about ten years ago but were still separate kennels, Hygate and Inspiration and had each already been breeding and showing our dogs in conformation, field and obedience for many years. After three or four years we decided to combine into one kennel and this partnership has enabled us to the best possible job of breeding quality dogs with sound temperaments and sound bodies. All of our pups are raised in our homes- our kitchens to be exact. We set up a whelping box in the kitchen where the pups are born and kept for the first few weeks of their lives. When they are old enough they are carried outside every morning and left out for the day with frequent visits for cuddling and playing (after all, playing with the pups is the fun part of breeding dogs). At sunset they are carried back into the kitchen to their whelping box. If the litter is large and they are outgrowing the whelping box, they are sometimes taken to a large kennel run at night, which is either on the patio or in the garage depending on the weather at the time. Although we feel our dogs are quite wonderful to look at, the most important requirement of our breeding program is temperament. We absolutely will never breed a dog with anything less than the perfect Labrador temperament as we keep puppies out of every litter and we have to live with them too. One of the main reasons we have Labradors is because of their wonderful temperaments and big hearts. The temperament we breed for is what we call a "light switch" dog. You can turn them on, then turn them off. In other words we breed a dog that is happy to lay at your feet and be a couch potato, but on a moment's notice is ready to chase a ball, go for a walk, hunt birds, or guide a blind person. Labradors are wonderful dogs with which to raise your children. However if you have very small children, remember taking on any 7 week old puppy is like adding another child to your home and will be that way for approximately six months to a year depending on your commitment to training and consistency with the pup.

The pups are started on a worming program at 2 weeks of age and are wormed at 2, 3, 4, 6,7,8 weeks as per the protocol of the manufacturer of the wormer. At six weeks of age the pups are all vaccinated for Distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvo virus with a high titer vaccine. They should continue to receive DHP-P vaccines every three weeks until they are 16 weeks and at that time they should receive the DHLP-P which also includes the Leptospirosis vaccine and at that time they should also receive their rabies vaccination. Your Veterinarian will put your pup on a vaccination schedule.

At six weeks your puppy will also be microchipped. This is a safeguard to help you get your pet back should it ever be lost or stolen and also to help keep dogs out of animal shelters. If you register your dog with the registering body handling your particular microchip, when the dog is scanned at the shelter and a microchip number is found, the registering body can be contacted and the shelter can obtain your address and phone number as well as that of the breeder enabling them to find someone to claim the pet. Our puppies all sell for $850.00 and that includes worming, 1st vaccination, and microchipping. We always have a waiting list for our puppies and the pups go to their new owners on a "first come, first serve" basis. To get on the waiting list you must send "good faith" money to the amount of $150.00 and your name will be put on the list on the day the "good faith" money is received. When you send your $150.00, you must include your name, address, phone number and what you want in a puppy (color, sex, etc.). It is also helpful if you have an e-mail address you can include as it is easier to keep you updated on the progress of the litter in that way. The "good faith" money is refundable up until the time the litter reaches three weeks of age. By that time we have begun to turn potential buyers away assuming the whole litter is sold, therefore at that time your deposit would become unrefundable. If, of course, for any reason we were unable to provide a puppy to you, then your money would be returned or you would have the option of leaving your deposit for the next litter.

All of our puppies are sold on an AKC limited registration which means the puppy cannot be bred or shown in conformation but may be shown in obedience, agility, hunt tests or any type of performance events. This is just one way that the AKC and we can fight against overpopulation of dogs and irresponsible breeding. Show quality puppies are sold to "known breeders" only. If one is a breeder and we are not personally acquainted with you, we will ask for references from other breeders and we will speak to those breeders to confirm that you are the right breeder for one of our dogs and our dogs are right for you. We always keep at least one puppy out of every litter as we are doing these breedings for ourselves and we always have first choice of any litter we breed. We usually select our pups at six weeks and any show quality pups that will go to other breeders. Most litters only will contain 1-3 show quality pups. If the litter is large we are more likely to get more show quality pups than if the litter is small just because of the percentages. The pet puppies are usually able to leave at 7 weeks of age. We will call those who have deposits in the order in which we received the deposit to set an appointment for the puppy to be picked up.

All of our breeding dogs have had all of their joints x-rayed clear of any hereditary joint disease. With our own dogs we have them Wind-Morgan certified at 1 yr. of age. Wind-Morgan is quite stringent in their evaluation of joints and they require the x-ray of shoulders, hips, hocks, and elbows to certify a dog. Our stud dogs at 2 years of age are also certified by the Orthopedic Foundation of America on their hips and elbows. We do this because they are used at stud by other breeders in many parts of the country who may not be as aware of the Wind-Morgan program but do know about the OFA. Our dogs all have their eyes certified clear by a board certified Veterinary Opthalmologist annually. Our stud dogs, because of their impact on the breed, also have their hearts cleared for any hereditary heart disease by a board certified Veterinary cardiologist by color doppler and echocardiogram. This is not something we see often in Labradors but by only using heart clear certified stud dogs we hope to keep it that way.

When you receive your puppy you must have it checked by a Veterinarian within 48 hours (Sunday not included in the 48 hours) and if there is any medical problem with the dog you may return it for a full refund or a different puppy if one is available within 12 hours with a letter from the Veterinarian describing the condition. We will take back a dog we have sold at any time in its life and in fact in our bill of sale we stipulate that if you should ever have to or choose to dispose of this dog, we must be given first right of refusal. If you return the dog to us we will return your purchase price as soon as we are able to resell the dog. If you are returning a ten year old dog to us, you must realize that there is little chance we will be able to resell that dog but will be able to place it into a good home or will keep it until its death so you will not get your original purchase price back but you certainly would have gotten your money's worth during that ten years . WE DO NOT SELL PUPPIES OVER THE INTERNET. YOU MUST PHONE US AND SPEAK TO US PERSONALLY TO PURCHASE A PUPPY AS WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR DOGS ARE RIGHT FOR YOU BEFORE WE WILL SELL A PUP. AFTER WE SPEAK I WILL SEND YOU A DEPOSIT FORM WHICH YOU WILL NEED TO USE WHEN YOU SEND IN YOUR DEPOSIT IF YOU WISH TO PURCHASE A PUPPY FROM HYSPIRE.

Yes, our dogs are the English type. Actually if you look at pedigrees, etc. you will see many of our dogs are sired by English imports and some of our dogs are imports from Scotland and Holland. Our dogs have broad heads and bodies and thick coats, just as a Labrador is supposed to have. Our dogs also have deep bodies which sometimes gives the illusion of shorter legs, but they are as tall as any Labradors you will see anywhere. You might also notice that they have thicker legs which is what we call "good bone" just as in a person you might say "large boned". At this time we have several litters of blacks and yellows coming up. You may look on the "Breeding" page of our website to see the dogs and pedigrees and the estimated date of birth or if you do not have access to the internet you may call me for more information regarding individual litters.
