My Bike

sure how it was going to work out, then why in the world did they make a twelve hour drive, I wondered. That's what I thought, but I kept the thoughts to myself and waited.
It seemed to take an eternity and oh how I had longed to go.  But the time came when I heard my parent's car pull up into the gravel driveway.  Three brand new shiny bicycles sat on top of the red station wagon; a boy's bike, fire engine red; and two girls' bikes, one sky blue, and the other one, royal blue.
I longed for the royal blue one. "Which one's mine?" I hollered.  "When can I ride it?"
"You can have the royal blue one," answered Dad.  My heart jumped with joy.  It was the one that I had wanted!
"When can I ride it?" I asked again.
"I don't know.  There's not much place to ride a bike here," her father replied.  "And if we get the bikes down, I don't know that we'll be able to get them back up."
I adamantly thought to myself, "If you got them up there in the first place, you can do it again."
And then dad went on to say, "The main road's too curvy and dangerous, and you're not used to riding on gravel.  The driveway isn't that long anyway."
Finally, I found my voice, "Yes I can ride on rocks.  And the driveway is long enough," I declared.
"Oh, all right.  I guess we can get 'em down and you can ride in the driveway."  Finally a yes, I thought.
Dad, along with help from our relatives, got the bikes down, as I anxiously watched.
First came my brother's bike.  Then my sister's bike.  And then came mine.  And finally, at last, I was on a bike again; my own bike.
