Mothering is a blessing that shall not be forsaken. Let no person demean or belittle the awesome importance of a mother's role in her family, for it is the mother's emotional balance that builds a foundation of love.
In our hearts and minds are
the memories of our mothers, leaving great impressions upon artists throughout
the ages. "The Earth is our
Mother, she taught us to embrace the light" as Dead Can Dance sing in the
"Song of the Dispossessed".
There is delicate balance that must exist in the
lives of a mother, a balance that is reciprocated through unconditional love.
Unconditional love can fairly discern, promote tolerance, and encourage
exploration thereby creating an environment of health, growth, and peace for
the entire family. From my book, Natural
Learning, I expand upon Unconditional Love as a teaching
tool, "The expression of unconditional love is a conscious result of an
action instead of reaction, and a choice to allow compromises. We can teach Unconditional love by
extracting upon our life examples and sharing advice while allowing choices
regardless of outcomes. Many are starving on a diet of cynicism, confusion,
depression, sleepy awareness, and conventional nutrition and medicine. They are dying and they do not know it, or
do not know how to change it. They are
in great need of the light of unconditional love, sharing honesty with a caring
listener. They need you to be there, experiencing
growth. The experience of growth
through unconditional love transfers easily, and often unknowingly, between
children and adults."
As a child, keenly aware of the influence a teacher
has in children's lives, I became inspired to teach. My first steps toward the inspiration of teaching were to gather
materials, or extra handouts my teachers had made of our assignments, and
convince my friends and siblings to be my students. As I was fortunate enough to grow up with a daycare in our home,
I had a classroom full of kids, although, at times they were not altogether
attentive and willing, yet they enjoyed the engaging social play.
As a teen, I happily accepted babysitting jobs, in
hopes of paying for concert tickets and other fun activities, and found I was
learning a life skill that would help me develop a parenting plan. I saw dynamics of several family
relationships, some that worked and others that fell short. A strong feeling for advocacy took hold in
my early womanhood years, and has grown stronger everyday since.
As an adult, I tried many hats of many jobs, I found myself surfacing and rising in the childcare industry. I excelled in these positions because I had made a commitment to myself and to the children, to be there, to listen, to care, and to share love. The last childcare position I held before mamahood was as a preschool teacher in Seattle. The school is solidly established for over 15 years, and has a yearlong waiting list of top professionals from around the Puget Sound. The families were diverse, with several cultural backgrounds, and our curriculm reflected diversity.
Gathering opinions and ideas from many mothers
through observation and conversation, has allowed time for contemplation on the
elements I desired to develop as a mother.
As a mama of two bright toddlers, I am committed to homeschooling, and
we desire a classroom environment for interaction of other Homeschooled children
and parents. I have developed a
curriculm with key elements in whole natural development, recognized a need for
early education, and feel motivated to begin schooling in my community.
My personal curriculm includes, but is by no means
limited to, song, dance, art, biology, survival life skills, sustainable
practices, cultural studies (including foreign language, folklore, and
indigenous culture), stories, safety, whole person health, and community
life. The truest test shall be to build
community support and to make the goals of a whole education into fruition.
Now, I call to all mamas across the globe to center
thought upon the future of their grandchildren, and invest much energy in all
children's bright futures. Consider
your interests, skills, and outline those ideas into goals. Make a positive impact on the bright
beginnings of the children of today and tommorrow. Now is the time for conscious thoughts of love and understanding,
so allow it to come naturally.
