The Top 10 Reasons why Lawrence of Arabia became The Greatest
Movie Ever Made:
10) THE EDITING
Good editors keep the story
flowing, without distracting or confusing the audience.
9) EXTRAS
I LOVEextras in movies -- not
computer images, but real people, real camels and horses. It really adds to a
movie, makes it feel more authentic.
8) THE SETTINGS
Real sand in a real desert =
beautiful movie. The buildings were also magnificent.
7) THE CREW
How do you film in a desert?
How do you capture its beauty in picture and sound?
6) THE CAST
How do you perform in a
desert? In the sun? On a camel? Over 2 years?
5) THE MUSIC
How do you create the perfect
soundtrack? I love the opening sequence!!! The music is great
throughout the film, reinforcing the magnificence of the desert and Lawrence's
passion.
4) ROBERT BOLT
He wrote the screenplay --
probably the riskiest part in making this movie. You have to capture an
essence. He kept the dialogue interesting, witty, and to the point.
3) T.E. LAWRENCE
Movies based on true
stories/real people are nearly always good. If Lawrence hadn't been as
eccentric and mysterious a man, if he had not written about his experience, we
would never have seen as great a movie as this.
2) DAVID LEAN
How do you paint a story with
sand and sun? With white robes and blue sky? How do you capture ever changing
emotions on film?
1) PETER O'TOOLE
The whole movie is about a
man. O'Toole had to become this man, who many still find to be somewhat of an
enigma. The script is great -- and Lawrence is written as a complex character.
Someone might say that anyone reciting those lines would produce basically the
same effect -- oh, I don't think so. I cannot imagine anyone - *anyone* - playing Lawrence in a better
way. How do you create -- become --a hero (is that the right word? how about,
an extraordinary man) who is a British officer, but has Arabian interests at
heart, who is adventurous, but brilliant, cocky, yet vulnerable?
