CHAPTER 19

“Brian!” He felt someone shaking him by the shoulder. “Brian,” came the harsh whisper again. “Wake up. You can’t stay there. Take her to bed.”

Brian shook his head slowly. He didn’t want to open his eyes. He pulled Skye closer into his arms subconsciously and buried his face in her hair inhaling her perfume. Even in his drowsy state his body reacted to her. His fingers curled around her arm and began to move up and down. She moved and mumbled his name in her sleep making him smile. He was happy exactly where he was.

“Come on Brian, wake up. Take her to bed or you will both be sore in the morning,” came the voice again.

His eyes popped open and he noticed the darkness lit up momentarily by lightening in the distance. The storm was still in the area.

“Take her to bed Brian.”

“I am not taking her to my bed.” Brian said quietly.

He heard a chuckle from the distance. “He is a gentleman. That’s good to see in this day and age,” came the man’s voice. “I like that.”

“You’re no fun at all my dear,” replied the woman’s voice.

“Now now. It is good to see he respects our Skye. Their time will come.”

“But they will be so good together, just like you and I,” she said and Brian coughed, stirring Skye in her sleep again.

He decided to ignore the two and moved Skye around in his arms, standing up and lifting her with him. He straightened and groaned as his muscles protested the time he had been laying on the lounge in a crooked position. But it had been worth it. The whole day had been everything he could have wished for, ending in their falling asleep in the dark after sharing many loving kisses. He looked down at her and leaned down to brush his lips across her forehead. Right at this moment all he wanted to do was take her to his bed and softly kiss her all over waking her slowly leading to the two of them making love all night long. He had dreamt it many times and it was now within reach, but sanity prevailed and he walked towards the guest room.

Laying her down on the bed he lingered over her, his lips inches from hers. He wanted to kiss her, his whole being aching for the kiss and what could follow. He only met her… what was it? Three days, four days ago? He had lost track of time. All he knew was he wanted to be with her every spare minute he had. And leaving her now was going to be one of the hardest things he had done in a long time.

He brushed his lips softly over hers and again he heard her whisper his name in her sleep. He smiled and straightened, watching her. He was breaking down all her defences and worming his way into her life, he could tell.

“Yes Brian, she is moving on, and you are a part of her future.” The voice whispered around him.

“What? You read minds too?” he asked softly.

“Now and then. You know you are to be congratulated.”

“Oh, why’s that?” he asked distractedly. His eyes did not leave Skye’s sleeping form on the bed. Her shoes were already off, having kicked them off as they watched the movie and curled up in his arms. He leaned down and pulled the blanket over her and she snuggled in, remaining asleep.

“Because most men these days would no doubt have taken advantage of the situation you now face. You though, you are a gentleman. It’s a rare thing nowadays. It warms my heart immensely to know Skye is with a man who will treat her right and respect her. You are a very good man Brian.”

“I might not be feeling so good now,” he said with a touch of irony.

She chuckled. “Your time will come and you will know when it is the right time.” It felt like she patted him on the back for comfort and his eyes left Skye to look. There was no one there. “In the meantime. Cold shower,” she said, chuckling again.

“Yeah, right,” Brian said dryly. He might very well need one. He looked back at Skye and reached down to run his fingers through her hair. She moved her face into his hand and he let it stay there again for a moment longer. Then he turned and walked away, standing at the door to watch her just a little longer. It took a massive effort, but he walked away from the door and down to his room and his bed alone. The cold shower was sounding very inviting.

**********

Skye woke in the morning, disorientated and confused. This was not her room, and it wasn’t even her house. She blinked here eyes and tried to remember. Rain was still tapping on the window pane and the storm from the previous night came back to her. Then she remembered Brian. She smiled. She had fallen asleep in his arms while they watched and sat quietly in the darkness.

He had kissed her. She had kissed him. Her body warmed at the memory and she wished he were here with her right now. She longed to be holding him again, running her arms over his body like she was the night before feeling his warmth. She looked around the room. This had to be Daniels guest room and she wondered how she got there. Had Brian carried her? She vaguely remembered him doing that, but he was talking to someone. She was sure he had been. Or had it been another one of her dreams. She remembered dreaming of her grandmother again. Had Brian been talking to her in her dreams? The rest of the dream made her blush and her body tingled again. How long would it be before she practically threw herself at him? She wanted him and she knew it. Surely he knew it too. It just wasn’t behaviour she was used to and letting him know was going to take a different behaviour than she was used to.

A knock at the door brought her back to senses. “Come in.”

The door opened, and Brian stepped in, fresh from a shower, his damp hair curling around his neck. She itched to run her fingers through it. He stood in the doorway, holding a cup of steaming coffee just looking at her. Skye sat up and he smiled. “Good morning. How did you sleep?”

“Like a baby,” Skye said to him. She looked up at him through curious eyes. “How did I get here last night?”

“Um, I carried you in. Is that okay?” he asked and she nodded. He looked so good he literally took her breath away. “I brought you some coffee. Would you like me to bring it in?”

“Sure.” Her dreams last night were coming back to her and she was feeling confused and a little bit warm. She hoped she wasn’t blushing. “Brian, when you carried me in last night, was someone else here?”

The look on his face confused Skye even more. For a moment he had the look of someone who had been caught doing something he shouldn’t be. “No. Why would you ask that? No one was here last night but us. Who would come out in that storm?”

Skye shrugged. “It’s okay, I must have dreamt it. It sounded like you were talking to someone. But then I was dreaming about my grandmother later on, so maybe my subconsciousness was thinking of that.”

“Probably.” He sat on the edge of the bed and passed her the coffee. Skye took a sip and sighed her delight at the brew first thing in the morning. “A morning coffee person too hey?”

“Oh yes. It’s a necessity. Thank you.”

“My pleasure,” he said to her, instantly thinking of the pleasures he had dreamt of and felt himself blush. “What would you like for breakfast? It’s still raining fairly heavy, I don’t think you could go home yet.”

Did he want her to go home? She hoped not and she would spend breakfast letting him know that. “I’m easy,” she said and groaned at the double meaning of the phrase. She watched him chuckle and forced herself to hold back a moan. Heavens, anything Brian did was making her a bundle of raw desire. “I mean, thank you. I would love some breakfast.”

**********

The next few days were spent with neither one of them far away from the other. The grandparents didn’t get a lot of time to talk to their human counterparts much because they were always together. They spent a lot of time walking and talking, their arms securely around one another, their conversations interrupted by many deep kisses. Brian was beginning to feel guilty that he wasn’t telling Skye all about himself and vowed to tell her when he returned from his meeting in New York. Neither one of them were looking forward to those few days while he was away. But she deserved to know why this sort of thing would happen to him regularly. He had to know if they would have a future together before he became hopelessly involved. He knew that was a futile thought, because he was already hopelessly and completely in love with the woman who had one day invaded his dreams and was now a very real part of his life.

“So how’s life in hiding treating you Brian?” Nick asked him when he arrived at the offices of the record company. These surroundings were so in contrast to what he had lived for the past two weeks.

“Pretty good Nick, pretty good.” Brian said smiling, a real bounce in his step.

“Woah, it looks like it too. Are you the same Brian who left us mere weeks ago with a heavy heart? Or did aliens take him away and leave you in his place?”

“Ha ha, funny man aren’t you? As a matter of fact, I am enjoying my anonymity very much. It’s so stress free where I am staying, and I really like it.” He smiled as he spoke feeling happiness when he thought of his time with Skye and the carefree life he was living.

“There’s a girl there isn’t there?” Nick asked out of the blue. He knew his friend so well.

Brian looked at him through hooded eyes. Was he so transparent? “What makes you say that?”

“I can tell. There is, isn’t there.” Brian didn’t say anything in reply. “Ahh,” he clapped him on the back. “I knew it. Does she know who you are?”

“Of course she knows. She knows my name is Brian Littrell. She knows I come from Kentucky and I travel a lot in my stressful job.”

“And?” He raised an eyebrow at him. “She doesn’t know you are a Backstreet Boy does she? That you are famous the world around and known by millions who want every piece of you that they can get?”

Brian shook his head sadly. He had put that side of his life behind him for the vacation time. “No, she doesn’t know. But I have to tell her.”

“Why tell her? Does she have to know?”

“Of course she has to know. If I want a future with her I have to tell her. What would she think if I disappear for weeks on end and I can’t explain where I am or where I’ve been?” Brian said clearly distressed at the thought.

“It’s serious then?” Nick asked, his attitude changing along with the question. He leaned back against the wall giving Brian his full attention. His blue eyes showed concern.

“Yeah Nick. It’s serious.” He had a faraway look in his eyes. “I already miss her like crazy. She’s the one Nick.”

Nick’s eyes opened wide with surprise. “The one? This has happened fast.”

Brian laughed ironically. “Not really, I have known her for months without even knowing it.”

“You’re talking in riddles Brian. What do you mean?”

“She’s the one I was dreaming about, I’m still dreaming about.”

“What” Are you serious? You can’t be serious.”

“Oh I’m serious alright Nick. It kinda freaked me out when I saw her, but there she was. I would have recognised her anywhere. There was no mistaking her.”

“No chance you are just wishing it was her?”

“None at all. It’s her. I’ve even dreamt of her family, her house, her….” He paused. “Her fiancé that got killed.” He didn’t want to elaborate on his ghostly presences. He could just see Nick’s face if he told him he had visitors from the other world helping him along the way with his relationship with Skye.

“This is really freaky Brian.”

“You’re telling me. But I know it is meant to be. I dreamt about her for a reason, and I went down there for a reason.,” he said without giving away where he had been. He didn’t want anyone to know. “We were meant to be together and when I go back, I am going to tell Skye all about my other life and hope beyond hope that she is okay with it, because I am really scared it won’t be.”

“Skye? That’s a nice name. She would be crazy to let this get between you. Even I can see how much she means to you. And if you mean as much to her then it has to work. But Brian it’s only been 2 weeks since you were gone. Don’t rush things.”

“I met her a week ago, but I’m not rushing things. We have all summer. And then I am going to ask her for more, if she’ll accept this life.”

“Brian, I wish you all the best. I can see how much you feel for her. But speaking of this life, we better get to this meeting. Have you told the others yet?”

“No, I’ll pick the best time,” he said as Nick threw his arm around his shoulder and they walked in the direction of one of the executive offices. This was a life far removed from the life he had been living for the past two weeks. While he loved most things that went with his performing life, there were parts of it he disliked. It all came with the territory though, so you either gave it away or kept going. He couldn't imagine his life without it so he kept going. Sharing it with someone he loved would make it easier to cope with and he hoped he had found that love.
