Chapter 17

That was exactly how it happened. Brian left her that morning with another sizzling kiss before dashing out the door to a waiting David who would escort him. Sue shook her head at the thought of always having to make sure someone was there to accompany you wherever you went. Her little bit of time she had spent with Will had been pleasant, but she imagined after a while it would get tiresome.

She was beginning to feel a little lonely just sitting around the hotel room. Ones own company was nice for a while, and Sue had lapped it up taking a warm shower, and generally indulging herself, but now what? Just as she was beginning to feel a little bored being by herself, when there was a knock at the door. Habit had her peeking out the peephole, and she was pleasantly surprised to see Jac standing there.

"Jac, good to see you again. I was starting to feel a little bored in here."

"It can get a bit like that. TV can be a little monotonous after a while." Jac agreed. "Don't you have your work to do though? That would keep you occupied."

"Yeah, but Brian says we are off again tonight, so I didn't bother to set it all up. I have to judge what the best procedure will be too. Besides a couple of days break will be good. I worked solidly on the last job I had."

Jac nodded then a silly smile crept across her face. She was changing the subject, Sue could tell. "So you surprised Brian." She raised an eyebrow. "Last night was good?"

Sue felt herself blushing. She knew what Jac was asking her. "Hmmm, yes, last night was good."

Jac smiled softly. "I'm glad. Brian needs someone like you."

"Like me?" Sue asked. She was nothing out of the ordinary. She had to know what Jac meant by that comment.

"Yeah, someone who loves him, the way he is, but someone who is still her own person, not just blindly following him around." Jac could see Sue was confused. "It's happened before Sue. He has had girlfriends that are only with him because of who he is, what he can give them. Brian has thought he was head over heels in love, but it was never returned. And he was never really in love either he just wanted to be. But now, with you, I can tell it is for real. You do feel the same way about him don't you Sue?"

Sue nodded. "Yes, I do. I love Brian. I think I understand what you mean. I feel like I should be paying my way here somehow. It's a little uncomfortable just tagging along, and I have only been here a little over half a day."

Jac laughed. "Get used to it, because none of the guys would let you pay for anything. Particularly Brian, he is a southern gentleman. Don't feel bad about that. Brian wants you here, you are his guest, and guests are treated the same as the Boys themselves."

"Yeah, I guess I can get used to it. But should I say something to Brian? I don't want him to think I am one of those girls he had before. I don't want anyone to think I am freeloading."

"Brian knows Sue. He knows you aren't like the others. But Brian can be a bit possessive. Just be aware of that."

Sue sat there contemplating what Jac had just told her. She thought about Brian and the way he was, and the things he had said. While he intimated that she belonged to him, she was sure he meant it in a non-possessive way. He acted like she guessed a man in love would act. He would want to be with her, as she wanted to be with him. "Possessive?" Sue asked.

"Yeah." She thought for a minute before continuing. "It's natural, he wants to be with you. But he can sometimes overdo it."

Sue laughed. "Jac, right now, I think I want as much attention from him as I can get. But I will keep it in mind." She went into her own little world for a moment, knowing deep down that Jac could very well be right. Brian craved love and attention and it would only be right that he would expect it back. She only hoped Jac telling her this wouldn't prejudice her understanding of Brian's actions. No she wasn't going to dwell on it and just enjoy her time with him. It would be over too soon.

"So, what are the plans today. You are coming to the basketball game today?" Jac asked her bringing her out of her thoughts.

"Well, yeah, Brian asked me to come. I am a little nervous about it though. I haven't been out in public with Brian before like this. I want to be with him, I am nervous about the fans reactions."

Jac spent the next half hour calming Sue down about being out in public with the Boys, in particular as a girlfriend of one of them. Jac knew Brian would find it difficult, because he would want to be holding Sue close, but as much as he was a loving person, he never showed much of his private life to the public. It would be interesting to see how he handled the day. Then again, the basketball might distract him some. That made Jac smile to herself. Brian loved his basketball.

It was after midday and Sue and Jac decided a light snack would be a good idea. They didn't want to sit there in the hotel room, so with Will following them, they made their way down to the small dining room in the hotel. The fans didn't know Sue yet, but they knew Jac, so they had to be careful. Will kept a respectable distance from where they were seated, allowing them some freedom.

"Just enjoy the anonymity Sue. It won't last much longer," Jac laughed at her.

Sue looked around and did notice a few girls hanging around, who could indeed be fans. She sighed wondering if she could cope with this life. Their life, their relationship was obviously going to be like living in a fishbowl. She hadn't much thought about that until this moment. She sighed and looked over the classy looking menu. Even this was not something she was used to. Her life was taking a turn, for better or worse she wasn't sure, but she knew one thing. She wanted to be with Brian no matter what.

Brian returned from his interview to find the hotel room empty. Disappointment shot through him at not finding Sue there. He had hoped she would be there, well, he really had expected her to be there because he didn't think she would wander off on her own. He had to remember she was an independent person and not to expect anything.

What was he going to do now? Disappointment filled him. The whole time coming back to the hotel he was imagining coming back, walking into the room and holding her in his arms to kiss her till they were both breathless. Now he was aching for her. He had to get a grip on himself, get used to the fact that she wasn't like the other girls he had thought he was in love with. This time it was for real, he was deeply in love with Sue, and one of the qualities he loved so much about her was that she was independent.

He saw a note on the dresser. The envelope was in Sue's handwriting and he tore it open to read. She was out to lunch with Jac? He wanted to have lunch with her. More disappointment flowed through him and he knew he was being unreasonable. But she had only arrived yesterday and he wanted to spend every available minute with her. What was he going to do now? He couldn't go down there and demand she come back with him. How would that look? He shook his head. She was doing crazy things to his head.

He needed something to eat so he rang for room service. He wished he could just go down to the restaurant and eat. But that wasn't an option for him most times. Before long a lunch of mixed sandwiches and salad arrived. He would have some of that choc chip ice cream they didn't get around to eating last night too.

He decided a warm shower might make him feel better, but the disappointment would not subside until he had Sue back in his arms again. He dressed for the game, then, with impeccable timing, his lunch arrived.

Shortly after Brian sat to eat his lunch he heard Sue and Jac outside. They were laughing about something and he sat, anticipation at seeing her again building within him. There was only a little bit of time before they had to leave for the basketball game, and he wanted just a little private time. He sat, sandwich in hand waiting for the door to open. As soon as the door opened and Sue was entering, all the disappointment he felt before vanished. She was here and that was all that mattered.

He dropped the sandwich and walked over to her. She walked straight into his arms and lifted her lips for a kiss. "Hmm, I missed you," she murmured between kisses.

"I missed you too. I thought we would have lunch together." He said to her kissing her again.

Sue moved back and studied him. Was this what Jac had been talking about. Her mind screamed at her not to analyse everything Brian said or did, but she couldn't help it now. She wished Jac had never said anything. "Sorry, Jac came over and we talked. We both felt like getting out of this room, so we went downstairs. I wasn't sure what time you would be back. You weren't even sure if you would be back." She smiled when she saw the understanding in Brian's eyes.

"Yeah, that's easy to understand. I know how that feels, a lot. I'd just been looking forward to seeing you again, holding you in my arms."

"Well, I am here now. Besides, it was only a few hours that you were away. I still missed you though," she added.

Brian kissed her then, all the disappointment leaving his body being replaced by the desire he felt for Sue. Yes, he was going to have to get used to his independent girl and her independent ways because he loved her so very much.

The basketball game sure was an eye-opener for Sue. Timing didn't allow them to stay for the entire game, needing to be back at the concert venue before the end. But the fans there surprised Sue. As soon as any one of them saw any of the Boys, the screaming would be deafening. She felt nervous about the whole situation, but Brian held her hand tightly the whole time, giving her strength. She was glad for that. This was all new to her and a little distressing.

"It's okay Sue. We're safe up here. And Will is here, he will stay while we go down there to sing the anthem."

"You're singing the anthem? I didn't realise that. I thought you were just coming to watch." Sue was amazed.

"No we get asked to do this quite a lot. Whenever we can fit it in our schedules, as the 5 of us, then we will do it. It's hard to get us all together at one time though," he laughed. "I love coming to the basketball game to do this. You know how I love basketball." Sue remembered back to the first day he had come to her place and smiled at him. He smiled back, their eyes locking once again with desire.

"Rok, would you snap out of it. It's time for us to go." The other 4 were already standing at the back of the box they were sitting in to make their way down to the court as Kevin yelled at him.

"Okay, I'm coming." He looked at Sue. "Kiss for luck?" he asked.

Sue just smiled and dropped a kiss on his lips, lingering a moment before pulling away. "Good luck Brian."

He smiled brightly and was gone. Jac scooted over and sat next to her while they waited. "It's so nice to see Brian happy again Sue. You've done that for him." Jac said to her and Sue merely smiled. "Everyone was worried about him."

"Well, I am thankful to Kevin for insisting Brian go on that blind date that night, even if I had no idea what was going on."

"Oh that night." Jac giggled. "It was a bit of a disaster too wasn't it?"

"Not at all. His nervousness was nothing but endearing and I think I was falling in love with him more with every little thing that happened." she said to Jac just as the Boys were being introduced. Jac smiled at her with warmth. She knew she would need her support throughout this visit she was making and felt them already becoming firm friends.

The music began to play as the crowd stood and became silent. Brian began to sing the opening words to the national anthem. Her heart swelled with pride as she watched him sing, his hand over his heart as he did. Nick joined in and then they all sang together, harmonising perfectly. It was beautiful to listen to. Sue had never heard the anthem sung so beautifully.

As they finished, cheers echoed through the venue. They smiled and waved at the crowds of adoring fans, as well as the people who grudgingly cheered as well. They knew they would never get everyone's approval. Sue watched them walk off the court one by one and sat eagerly awaiting their return. It was only moments and Brian was back by her side asking her what she thought, how they sounded.

"You were perfect, that was so beautiful Brian, all of you," Sue said turning to include them all.

Brian pulled her into his arms and kissed her quickly. He knew he would be seen, but at that moment it didn't matter. He moved back and smiled at her. "Glad you liked it."

They were able to stay and watch three quarters of the game, much to Brian's delight. But before he was ready they were being expertly ushered out, skilfully avoiding any contact with fans. Sue's first experience out with Brian in public had been uneventful, and for that she was thankful.
