Derwent Pierce I

Name: Derwent Pierce I
Derwent the First
Derwent the Original
Derwent One
DP1
House: Aether (Salem)
Age: Deceased at 174
Description: Before he died, Derwent I was an old man who rarely left his rooms without a cane. He had thinning white hair, sharp blue eyes, and stood 5'6". Despite his advanced age, he was not a frail man and he tended to use his cane more for emphasizing points and waving threateningly than to lean on while walking.
Personality: Derwent I was not a nice man, and did not even attempt to make anyone believe otherwise. He enjoyed intimidating people, and had never had much respect for life (outside of his own). He was very pleased with his own accomplishment of bringing the Pierce Family back to wealth and power, though, in all honesty, he found 'civilization' to be somewhat stiffling and secretly preferred the freedom of the Old West. He took up wand dueling, dark magic, and politics to recapture that sense of being able to do whatever he wanted.
Interpersonal Relations: Interpersonal relations were never Derwent's strength. In his youth, if he didn't get what he wanted he pointed a gun or wand at his challenger and that usually fixed the problem. He never really moved beyond that method of persuasion.

In his life, there were exactly five people who were able to enjoy his company for any extended length of time. The first was his sister, Berta. Derwent and Berta had been born only a year apart and they were always very close siblings. It was on Berta's prediction that Derwent went West to seek his fortune. Berta is the only living person with whom his association did not end. She has tea with his ghost every Thursday.

The second was his illegimate son, Jediah, who was born when Derwent was only seventeen. Jed was the only child Derwent took an active role in raising, treating his son with both respect and affection up until Jed began at Hogwarts. At that point it became clear to Derwent that he had done something seriously wrong, because the boy was Sorted into Gryffindor. He became a bit more distant after that, hoping that might reverse whatever damage had already been done.

The third person to actually like Derwent was Jan Tellerman who, many would be astonished to learn, was a muggle. She was, in fact, a muggle criminal. Derwent met her during Jed's first year at Hogwarts, and they were working scams together by the end of that year. By Jed's fourth year at Hogwarts, Jan had borne him twin daughters, Regina and Virginia. Jan's association with Derwent ended shortly before he returned East when she died by Derwent's hand (peacefully, in her sleep, because he did like her, but she might have followed him East and caused problems with the marriage his father had arranged for him).

The fourth was his first legal wife, Natalie. He never had a lot of respect for Natalie, and he probably loved Jan more, at least early in their marriage, but she was what he expected in a wife. He did not dislike her, which is more than could be said for a lot of people that Derwent met. By the time of their deaths, mere days apart from one another, she had become an important part of his life by the simple expedient of having been at his side for well over a century.

The last was his daughter-in-law, Druscella.
