I busied
myself getting the house ready
putting up decorations and fixing the table just right
I picked up the cake yesterday, the pizza was on its way
I had been planning this party for weeks.
My little boy is 2 today
The time has flown by fast
Moments ago he was so tiny
but now he's officially a toddler
We were short this month, no big presents
i picked up a toy car from the grocery
i know he'll just love it, regardless of my guilt
hes got lots of family to spoil him anyway
The house looks perfect and the food will be great
but i can't stop thinking about the tiny gift
that i didn't have time to wrap
and how i wish i could have got him more
Just then i realize that the front door is open
and that The Boy is nowhere in sight
he must have wandered outside again
I just can't keep him out of the sunlight
I search franticly for a second as i walk outside
and then i hear his laughter to my right
there under the stairwell i see him
he is completely covered in mud
at first i think, why now? they'll be here any minute
but then hear him laugh again
and i see him splashing happily
and i realize, he's never done this before
I see my mother pull up in the old red car
and she clucks her tounge as she sees him
But i just smile as he trips and lands with a splash
Just then he sees his grandma
"mamoo" he yells as he heads for her
and she has a look of panic on her face
i run and grab him before he gets there
the outfit i had planned weeks ago was covered in mud
"oh Jade, get him in the bath before everyone gets here"
my mother says as she looks at his muddy body
"just a few more minutes" i tell her, as i let go of Mr Wiggles
As soon as his feet touch the floor
he runs back into the mud pile
He splashes for a while and laughs
until he trips and falls on his knees
he cries and i take him inside and into the bath
hes now all clean and ready for his party
I completely forgot to give him his present at the party
by now that little present that i bought doesn't matter
my boy has received the best present a boy can get
Today on his second birthday, my little Caleb has discovered mud.
