


Today IAF is regarded as the
world's fourth largest Air Force. With over 800 combat aircrafts, 300 transports
aircrafts and more than 300 helicopters including more than 75 armed helicopters
and 3 world's largest helo the Mi-26, IAF is also one the worlds most advance Air
Force.
Currently there are 5
operational commands, which are (1) The Western Air Command, (2) The South
Western Air Command, (3) The Central Air Comand, (4) The Eastern Air Command,
(5) Southern Air Command and 2 non-operational command- (6) The training Air
Command and (7) The Maintenance Air Command. Under these are numerous wings and
units, and under each wing there are squadrons.
Currently in the IAF's
inventory SU-30 MKI are latest and MIG-29 as main frontline fighter. In the near
future the LCA which is still under development, will soon join the team.
Mig-21, which is the backbone of IAF are currently being upgraded to Mig-21-93
standards and most of them have already gone under flight tests. IAF is also on
the verge of Nuclear force, which will require a additional command & control centre, which
includes AEW&C systems and Air to air refueling capability. IAF's AEW&C or
the AWAC is an A-50 with a Israeli radar, which is under construction and the
air to air refueling tanker is an IL-78 (tanker). Both of these aircrafts will
soon join the fleet.
Today IAF takes part in
various UN peace keeping missions. Also the northern sector is one the
responsibility of IAF as they are not well connected by roads. Daily drop
sorties and landing sorties are undertaken by the two squadrons , No.48 "The
Camels" and No.25 "The Himaliyan Eagles". In the middle section No. 44 Squadron
"The Himaliyan Geese" does the job.
