Well, it's kind of hard to say what will work best for you. I think, a beginner should start with a single textbook and go straight through it. That's isn't the way I did it though. I went on a shopping spree the moment I decided to learn Japanese. Half of those books have collected dust on my shelf! So my advice is to get a few good resources to start with and stick with them unless you find you don't work well with them. The below I found to be excellent... For the very beginner, I suggest buying JUST a text book for now. Play around with it. Get to know the language a bit. Then stretch out to new things like kanji, grammar books, or other fun stuff. For a textbook - Japanese for Everyone For a Kanji book - A Guide to Reading and Writing Japanese For a Grammar explanation book - A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar For a good guide book - Lonely Planet Japan (6th Ed) For a Dictionary - For Literature - For Multimedia - And for Video I HIGHLY RECOMMEND - Seven Samurai
If you are a beginner and want a jump start on conversational Japanese, I suggest the Pimsleur CHEAP ABRIDGED tapes (see the very bottom). I believe this is 6 tapes for about $20-25. I used them when I first started to learn and was amazed at how quickly I could speak simple Japanese.TEXTBOOK more... |

Grammar For some reason, Amazon.com says it's out of print but they're everywhere here in Japan. Try to order it - I'm sure they can get it. |

![]() Pimsleur's Japanese Tapes The abridged version is the first 4 tapes of the complete 15 tapes (30 thirty minute lessons)I highly recommend the cheap, abridged version for the beginner. The full version is a bit (VERY) expensive but I am sure it is worth it - I haven't personally used it.
