- Choose which dog you are going to train.
- Mutts, Danes and Labs are a good choice for trick dogz
- Other dogz can learn tricks too with time and patience.
- First of all you need to sit down and decide what treatz are going to be used for what trickz.
- For example you can decide that when you gesture upwards with a steak treat the dog should walk on his hind legs.
- You can use the cat treatz also if you have catz3.
- Teach each dog individually at first.
-
Teach them either in the kitchen or preferably the playpen
- remember to put up all the toys and other distractions.
-
Keep an eye on the bottom of the screen where it makes comments to you.
-
It will tell you if you just gestured upwards, downwards, etc.
-
Practice this awhile when there are no dogz in the room so you can get the hang of it.
-
It is easy to gesture the wrong way.
-
If you do gesture the wrong way and the dog does the trick he was suppose to do for that gesture reward him anyway - It was your mistake not his.
-
Gesture and wait for him to do a trick
- if it is not the trick you want then gesture again
-
sometimes it takes several times.
-
When he does it right immediately give him the treat
- After he eats the treat pet him.
-
Then have him do it at least three times in a row.
-
If you have a second dog you can bring in your other dog at this point.
- Gesture again - now the first dog should do the trick - reward him.
-
Keep this up - the second dog will generally follow the first dog's example within a few tries.
-
Give him the treat when he does - don't forget to also quickly reward the first dog.
-
Once the second dog has done the trick once remove the first dog and continue reinforcing the trick.
-
Alternate the dogz that get to learn the new tricks first.
-
Once they are grown and have their own babies they will be great teachers for the babies.
- One trick you will want to teach them is to bring the toy to your hand.
- To do this gesture over the toy with the treat of your choice.
- Move you hand away a little bit the dog should bring the toy to you
- This is an easy trick for your dog to learn and most will do it quickly.
- The advantage to this is in teaching your dog to fetch.
- Of course labs have little trouble with this concept.
- Throw the ball (not very hard) and gesture over it as it is moving.
- Then wait for the dog to get in and bring it to you.
- When he does drop the treat and immediatly began petting him - before he picks the treat up. This will help him learn to fetch without the treat later.
- Always after a training session give your dog a lot of petting and a bowl of water.
