China Photos: Like I have mentioned on
another page, in 1999 I spent 7 months living and working in Shanghai, China. I
have posted a few pictures below from my time there.

From the left: Me, Paul, Michel
and Frank. We had been out for a wander around Puxi (The older side of Shanghai) So we
stopped and took this picture for no particular reason other than to step out of the
crowds of people, bikes and mopeds. |

A collection of snakes for sale
on the street. I ate snake in China. It was VERY fresh, brought to your table to check it
over before they took it into the kitchen and cooked it. I could give you the old "it
tastes like chicken" comment but it didn't. It didn't really taste like anything
apart from the shredded snakeskin which was absolutely awful. Without doubt the best food
I had in China was at a hotpot restaurant. A sort of huge fondue affair, really nice. |

OK the picture quality is a bit
ropey, but this is the whole family in Jurassic Pub in Shanghai. It was a prehistoric
theme pub. The Tyrannosaurus Rex skull you can see is part of a complete skeleton that
dominates the whole place. It starts on the ground floor and goes throughout the building.
The food is excellent. Cooked "Tepanyaki" style (At the table by your own chef)
I went there a few times although the first time was completely by accident. We were
hungry and it was the first place we found that was open. What a stroke of luck!!! |

Paul, Me, Michel and Frank on
The Bund (Wai Tan) Behind Michels head you can make out the Oriental Pearl TV Radio Tower.
We went up there for a look around, it was really smoggy and you couldn't see a great
deal. The best view point is from the 88th floor of The Steel Tower (Jin Mao Building) It
was a cold clear day and you could see for miles. It also has some really good food shops
in the basement. |

This was taken at the
apartments close to where we were living. There was a new restuarant opening called
"Yellow Submarine" they also did a pizza delivery service. On the opening night
they threw a party, as much beer as you could drink and an everlasting supply of pizza.
The couple on the right of the picture, Steve and Yuan are now married. I got an e-mail
from Steve a few weeks back, he and Yuan are now settled back in Michigan, USA. On my way
home from this party I decided to take a short cut and walked across a field.
Unfortunately the rain had turned the field into a mudbath and I sank up to my knees. |

This is a very old (I can't
remember exactly how old) Chinese temple at Hangzhou. There are loads of these temples on
a hillside along with some caves carved out of the rock where Buddhists used to go to
worship. An important religious site in China. |

This is how they keep the trees
in order in downtown Shanghai. All done without the aid of a harness or a safety net. |
