The DulcimerThe Mountain or "Lap" dulcimer is a fretted instrument of Scandinavian origins having 3 to 6 strings most commonly tuned in fifth intervals. The ease of play and variety of design have made it popular and affordable as a folk music instrument readily available to people of all ages who are charmed by the strains of traditional ballads and melodies. The unique major scale fret pattern allows even first-time players the opportunity to find success immediately. Dulcimers are made by woodworking craftsmen in the United States and England on a non-commercial basis. Their efforts give credence to the lap dulcimer as a true craft product, involving special skills and abilities created by individual luthiers. Orleans Dulcimers are made of native hardwoods and softwoods with the finest tuners. They are available at folk music and arts festivals throughout New York and New England. Inside the wooden body is a vibrating aluminum cone floating in a sound well with the bridge on top of the cone. The strings are half flat wound, medium gauge for less slide noise when playing with a glass or metal slide. First-time players will find the strings set high for blues-side playing. Strings can be adjusted according to a player's style. The Orleans Dulcimer resonator guitar is built with component and custom made parts and includes custom designed mother-of-pearl peghead inlay and a rosewood fingerboard and veneer. Tuners cost from $40-$140. Higher priced tuners are always better tuners. Orleans Dulcimers' resonator guitars have a unique custom sprayed metallic finish in three color choices, blue/silver/and green. Several handrubbed coats of primer are used to seal the body, while the neck is finished with satin smooth tung oil. Pricing for the resonator guitar starts at $950 for the basic instrument including inlay, a glass slide, and a one year guarantee with the original owner. Hardshell carrying cases start at $90. The longer neck and 25" string length provides more volume, while tuning is frequently an octave lower than standard mandolin tuning (G D A E). There is a wide field of tunings for the bouzouki/cittern, including (A D A D), (A D G C), and (D G B E). Bright and traditional, the Orleans Dulcimers' bouzouki/cittern is handmade with select mahogany and sitka spruce and is finished with several coats of handrubbed lacquer. Standard mandolin tuners, mother-of-pearl dots on a rosewood fingerboard, a decorative tailpiece, and a carrying bag come with the basic instrument for $675, tax and shipping not included. Tuners cost from $15 - $60+. Higher priced tuners are always better tuners. Extras can include ebony fingerboard, rosewood/walnut/cherry/curly maple body, Schaller tuners, custom inlay, Fishman transducer pickup, more... Please call or write for a FREE brochure. >HOME
