Unfortunately, this day was completely obscured by fog - less than 50 metres visibility at times. Thus I cannot say much about the views, apparently they stretch down the coast past Scarborough Castle to Filey Brigg (the end of the CW). Another consequence of the fog was that I took a short-cut into Scarborough by leaving the coast for a dismantled railway line exchanging a view-less coastal walk for a boring inland walk.
At Ravenscar, the CW heads towards the hotel before diverting onto Station Road for 100 metres and then taking a track straight to the cliff tops. The cliffs are followed towards the south over Beast Cliff and gently down to Petard Point (where the rumoured views start). There is a steep descent via steps into Hayburn Wyke with an enchanting small waterfall right on the shoreline (small detour needed). The delightful woods here are a nature reserve managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. The CW climbs up through the woods along good paths to reach farmland back on the cliff tops.
However I diverted from the official CW here. By turning uphill and to the left, a hotel is reached (useful for lunch even if following the CW) and just along its access road is the dismantled railway line. The track-bed gives quick and easy (if boring) walking all the way into Scarborough. This route bypasses the Scarborough Youth Hostel near Scalby Mills by a fair distance with some road-walking needed to get there. I found it easier just to look around for a B&B.
