BBA Program - Rules & Policies

Class Attendance
Each student is required to attend all classes held during each semester. Only three absences in one semester in each course may be excused. A student may be given a reduced or an 'F' grade or even be dismissed from the program for unexcused absences. However, any proposal for dismissal of students for unexcused absences will be reviewed and considered by the Academic Committee of IBA for a final decision.

Course Load for BBA Students
BBA is a full time course of study and every student without any exception must take 5 courses in each semester. Any student failing to take 5 courses in a regular semester will stand withdrawn from the program for that particular semester. Exception to this rule may be made by the Academic Committee of IBA. However, relaxation of taking full time course load may be allowed for reentering and transferring students. No student will be allowed to take more than 5 courses in a semester.

Incomplete Grade
For incomplete course work, a student may be assigned an 'INCOMPLETE' grade, which will be recorded as 'I' with an alternative grade based on the work completed till that point in time. A student will be allowed to complete an incomplete course within four weeks from the date of publication of the semester's results. If a student fails to complete the course work, he or she will automatically earn the alternative grade.

Repeating Course(s)
A course may be taken only once for a grade; however, a student receiving an 'F' grade must repeat the course and obtain a minimum of 'D' grade in that course in order to meet the degree requirement. Such repeat will be allowed at the end of the program or whenever the course is offered provided the number of courses including the repeat one for a student does not exceed 5 (five) in a semester. The grade earned on the retake will be shown in the Grade sheet along with the 'F' grade earned when the course was first taken. But the grade earned on the course(s) repeated will be substituted for 'F' in computing the CGPA. A course may be retaken only once. Failure to get a passing grade in the retake will result in dismissal of the student from the program.

Academic Standing of a Student
To remain in good standing, a BBA student must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.50 out of 4.00 on the basis of courses taken. The GPA or CGPA will be calculated on the basis of number of courses taken, including the course(s) in which a student receives an 'F' grade, until he or she repeats the course and the 'F' grade is substituted.

Probation and Dismissal
If a student fails to maintain a CGPA of 2.50 at the end of a semester, but obtains 2.00 or more, the student will be placed on probation. A student obtaining a CGPA of less than 2.00 shall be dismissed from the program. Failure to raise the CGPA to 2.50 in the next semester, by a student placed on probation, will result in dismissal of the student from the program. A student failing to maintain a CGPA of 2.50 at the end of the final semester may be allowed to repeat the courses of the last semester in which he/she has earned grade C, or lower than grade C. A student will be allowed to repeat the course only once. If, after repeating the courses, a student fails to raise his/her CGPA to 2.50, he/she will stand dismissed from the program.

Comprehensive Examination
The Comprehensive Examination is given to evaluate the students' capability to comprehend his/her major area of study. The student must take this examination to become eligible for the BBA degree. The examination is graded and the student must secure a minimum 'C' grade. The grade earned in this examination is reflected in the grade sheet of the student but is not included for calculating GPA or CGPA.

The comprehensive examination is usually given two weeks before the end of the semester in which the student is to complete the fortieth course. Failure in the comprehensive examination calls for a retake, which is allowed only once, unless otherwise decided by the Academic Committee. Such retake may be allowed not earlier than 30 days but within 90 days from the date on which the comprehensive examination was first taken.

Internship
Internship is a part of the BBA degree requirement. A student must pass the Comprehensive Examination before placement in the internship program. The primary goal of internship is to provide an on the job exposure to the student and an opportunity for translation of theoretical conceptions in real life situation. Students are placed in enterprises, organizations, research institutions as well as development projects. The program covers a period of 10 weeks of organizational attachment and 4 weeks of report finalization work.

The student is required to prepare and submit an internship report within the time specified. The internship report of a student will be graded as per usual grading practice of IBA. The passing grade in the internship program is 'C'. Failure to obtain passing grade will call for a redoing of the internship program. Such retake will be allowed only once. The grade earned on the internship report will be included in the grade sheet of the student.

Transfer of Credit Hours
Transfer of credit hours from institution(s) having equivalent curriculum, comparable grading system, and grading standard may be allowed for a maximum of 30 credit hours provided he/she has obtained at least 'B' grade(s) in the course(s) eligible for transfer. Transfer of credit will be considered only after a student enrolls in the program after fulfilling the admission requirements as laid down for regular students. Transfer of credit will be reviewed by the Institute on a case by case basis.

BBA-MBA Interface
After successful completion of the BBA program of this Institute, if a student wishes to pursue MBA degree, he/she may do so by going through the MBA admission procedures as laid down for the regular students. A student may be given exemption for a maximum of 10 (ten) core courses (equivalent to 30 credit hours) of the MBA program provided he/she obtained at least 'B' grade in similar course(s) in the BBA program. However, waiver of course(s) will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Withdrawal from the Program
Withdrawal from the program must be with permission and is allowed only once, on request from a student after completion of a semester. Withdrawal on other occasions may be allowed by the Academic Committee. Students with good standing only may be allowed withdrawal from the program. Those who have incomplete grades will not be allowed withdrawal. A student withdrawing from the program must complete the program within a period of eight academic years from the date of initial registration. The student can only be accommodated within the courses offered for the regular students.

Grievance Procedures Regarding Grades
If a student is aggrieved by the evaluation and grading of academic work by his/her instructor/supervisor, he/she may file a grievance application as per approved procedure of the Institute.

Students are strictly forbidden from adopting unfair means in class assignments, tests, quizzes, examinations, project work, term paper and report writing.

The following acts or activities would be considered as adoption of unfair means during examinations and other contexts:

If a student is detected by the instructor in adopting unfair means he or she may be given an 'F' grade at the discretion of the instructor for the assignment, test, quiz, paper, report, examination or for that course.

Adoption of unfair means may result in the dismissal of the student from the program and expulsion of the student from the Institute and as such from the University of Dhaka.
