Cricket

From the inception of the institute IBA students play cricket both formally and informally. Every year a cricket tournament is held in Dhaka University. All the departments and institutes take part in that tournament which is familiar to university students as “Inter-Department Cricket”. IBA is a regular participant of this tournament. IBA has a disadvantage over other departments regarding the supply of quality cricketers. Most of the departments and institutes of the university have a quota called “Player Quota” under which students who are good at any sports can seek admission without undertaking the rigid admission test. As a result of this, many professional players play more or less in every department. But IBA does not support this system.

Despite all these facts, IBA has its short history of success in the university inter-department cricket. In many occasions IBA reached the quarterfinal stage of the knockout system tournament; in two occasions it had made the semifinal: once in 1976 and again in1999.

Not only this, unofficially a cricket tournament is held in IBA every year which is played between the different batches of BBA and MBA. There is also one invited team: Hostel, where ex-students of IBA can play as well. The main organizers of this tournament are ever enthusiast BBA students. Personal trophies are given for outstanding performances in the tournament.

The Inter-Batch Cricket of IBA was first held in 1997 in which BBA 2nd batch and the Hostel reached the final. BBA 2nd batch won the championship outperforming the hostel by far.

In the next year, due to some unavoidable reasons, it was not possible to organize such a tournament. But in 1999 it started again. In that year BBA 6th became the champion showing sheer dominance in the whole tournament. BBA 4th batch got the runner-up belt. Rumi of BBA 4th batch got the ‘Highest Wicket Taker’ award. Anindya of BBA 4th batch won the ‘Highest Run Scorer’ award for his outstanding batting performance throughout the whole tournament which includes two consecutive fifties. He was also adjudged “Man of The Match’ in one of the two semifinals. In the other semifinal ‘Mithun of BBA 6th batch won the ‘Man of The Match’. He was also judged the ‘Man of The Tournament’ and ‘Man of The Final’ for his all-round performance.

In the Millennium Inter-Batch cricket tournament, the Hostel surprized all by winning the highly dramatic final against the then reigning champion BBA 6th batch. Saif of BBA 8th batch was the ‘Highest Run Scorer’ and the “Man of The Tournament’ for his brilliant batting which includes one century and two fifties. Mithun of BBA 6th batch got the honor of being the ‘Highest Wicket Taker’ of the tournament. The ‘Man of The Matches’ of the two semifinals are: Asif of BBA 5th batch and Saif of BBA 8th batch. In the final Mehbub  (BBA 2nd batch) of the Hostel got the ‘Man of The Final’ award for his furious bowling.

Moreover, every year informally some matches are played between the IBA alumni and the current IBA students, which bring the seniors and juniors together. This increases the cohesion of the IBA family.
