David was with us earlier this summer than the boys have in past summers. He was here for most of May and went home in June. Usually we have had the boys from the middle of June to the end of July. We had a nice time during the cooler part of the summer.

The second weekend of September, Irwin & Helen took a vacation trip to Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico. This was the first time we have been camping without Popcorn, the 1969 VW Campmobile. We finally sold that off the first part of this year. Irwin had owned that car since the spring of 1979, so it was an old friend. It needed a new engine and we just don't have the time to mess with that like we used to. So this trip we tried tent camping. We've decided we need to perfect this a bit. We also tried some "cabin" camping. That was a little easier to take.

We spent a night at Great Sand Dunes National Monument near Alamosa. Then we went down across Wolf Creek Pass to Pagosa Springs for a night. We got up early and went on down to Chama, New Mexico, where we caught the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad for the scenic ride on the old steam narrow gauge railway that winds through the mountains to Antonito, Colorado. It was a beautiful trip and the fall colors were just beginning to reach their peak.

We made our way back home going up through the Rio Grande Valley and over to Lake City and Gunnison and then back home. It was nice to be out and away from work and the phone.
