Byzantine Styles

Also very popular were Byzantine and Romanesque styles. Their dominating characteristic is the rounded arch. Also used frequently were designs and patterns in various colors of brickwork.

In London, two excellent examples are the Natural History Museum and the Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral.

Probably the most famous piece of Pittsburgh architecture is the County Courthouse, designed by H. H. Richardson, who gave his name to the style "Richardson Romanesque." Like Westminster Cathedral, St. Stanislaus' Church in the Strip District is designed with ornamental brick patterns.
