The 2006 IBPFT Colloquium: Racialized Images in Popular Culture and ESL

The 2006 IBPFT Colloquium was held during the 40th TESOL Convention in Tampa, Florida. It was entitled “Racialized Images in Popular Culture and ESL”.  The presenters were  Gyl Mattioli, Mary Romney, Marinus Stephan, & Gertrude Tinker Sachs. Below is the abstract of this colloquium:

People of color are often depicted stereotypically in popular culture, i.e., movies, television, music videos, etc., depictions which frequently result in negative and inaccurate perceptions of them.  Students who have been exposed to such images bring these perceptions with them to the ESL classroom.  These, in turn, can determine how ESOL teachers, particularly those of color, are perceived by their students and can adversely affect the teacher-student relationship.

The colloquium explored perceptions of people of color and their effects on student-teacher relationships in the ESL classroom.  Panelists discussed the effects of these perceptions on students’ ideas about who the best qualified ESL teacher is, what constitutes legitimate English, and who speaks it.  Participants showed examples of the types of images in question, shared their experiences with respect to perceptions of people of color originating from popular culture, and proposed strategies for addressing these perceptions in the classroom to a room full of interested TESOLers.  A lively question and answer session followed the presentations.
