Sergie Gonchar- Biography

The Washington Capitals selected Gonchar with the 14th overall
selection of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, and the offensive-minded defenseman
soon became a staple on the Caps' blueline and one of the League's top puck
movers. Gonchar broke into the League in 1994-95, playing his first game Feb.


7, 1995, and beating Jeff Reese of the Hartford Whalers for his first goal
April 21. He appeared in 32 games his rookie season, recording seven points
(two goals, five assists). As his NHL numbers improved year by year, Gonchar
also succeeded on the international circuit, winning the silver medal in 1998


and bronze medal in 2002 with Team Russia at the Olympics. In 2001-02, Gonchar
notched 59 points (26 goals, 33 assists) in 76 games for Washington.
