The image seen by clicking on the above website is The Castillo in Chichen Itza. Unbeknownst to me, this was actually a Mayan calendar, not just a neat=looking structure that took a long time to build. The components of the structure have direct correlations with the components of the Mayan calendar. This structure was look upon by the people as a symbol and a way of life. I came about this photo while searching the internet for photos of Mayan culture.
What I see in this photo is many years of hard work by a people dedicated to improving their lives and I think to improving the world. The structure is made of many rock stones. There are 365 steps on the structure, just like there are 365 days of the year.
To me, this photo is about achievement. It is amazing to me how a group of people could make something so impressive without the help of today’s modern machinery or tools. It also is a symbol of functionality. This structure played a key role in the way Mayans lived, and worked.
I chose this work because of its affect it has on me. As before, I find it a true miracle that this structure was built by hand using makeshift tools. It is also magnificent. It is such because it is still standing today. It stands and it represents. It represents something that is used everyday by millions of people around the world and that is the concept of time.
I would like to know more about the actual construction of this structure. I would like to know what is was like building it. I would like to see it in person to take in the full effect of its magnificence.
