I came across this piece by browsing yahoo.com for images of Cortes and Marina. What I see in the piece is power. I see Cortes sitting in a throne with Marina by his side. It appears to me that indigenous people are attempting to speak to Cortes yet Marina is there as a translator and buffer and will offer Cortes advice if needed. She appears to be humble. The subject of the work is of communication between Cortes and the Indian people. The work appears to be hand drawn in one color, black. The lines are very straight and definitive. There is a lot of white between the black lines which appears to make the black stand out on a white background. The artwork is a summation of what role Marina played in Cortes’ life. An example would be the way Marina was designated by Cortes as an interpreter. She stands while he sits. She is in close proximity of hi and the people he is speaking with in order to perform her skill. I saw this piece and immediately felt it was a good summation of Marina’s role; servant, interpreter, counterpart. I feel it is powerful and provides a good quick understanding to the novice the general role Marina played. I see her standing next to Cortes, not next to him as an equal. She is smiling therefore she seems pleasant and a good liaison. I would like to know where the image for this picture was supposedly captured. I am also curious as to the history of the picture in regards to what meaning it holds in the eyes of Mexican people and what it means to them in the history of their heritage. |
