Patsy Cline, (Virginia Patterson Hensley Cline Dick), was born on September 8, 1932, in Winchester, Virginia. At that time the Hensley family home was in nearby Gore, Virginia. Legend has it that she was singing, dancing and entertaining neighbors as early as age 3. Cline's big break came when she won an Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts program on Monday January 21, 1957 singing Walkin' After Midnight. She then pursued a recording career while appearing at the Grand Ole Opry in 1958, and received national awards in 1961 and 1962. Country music lost a magical entertainer when her life ended in an airplane crash near Camden, Tennessee, during the evening of March 5, 1963. Patsy was elected posthumously to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1973, and her reputation is maintained as one of the world's classic female vocalists. |
